A suggestion from. the
Huron County Developailent.
Committee to -form an
association of the towns'
development- -committees-
came under -some criticism
at a Goderich Economic
Development Committee
(GEDC) meeting last
Thursday.
GEDC member Don
Wheeler, who is also a
memberof the county's
development committee,
read a letter from the county
requesting that represen-
tatives from the town's
Minis
ion wanted among industry committee
development committee
attend an `exploratory'
meeting in Clinton on April
14 to determine whether such
an association should be set
- Wheeler explained that the
association,' which would
include members from all
the county's town and village
development or industrial
coiunittees, would be for
information sharing.
• "Itgives all the com-
mittees a chance to hear
what the rest of the county is,
doing; (with regards to in-
dustry and development)
andit also allows them to

-GEDC member -Stan Profit
questioned the need to form
such an association.
"What you're talking
about doing, should already
be happening right now. We
have a county development
department and the in-
formation you're talking
about sharing, should be.
county's
committee,"
there isn't the
there should
readily available to
everyone through that
department," he stated.
"Why set up yet another
committee," he asked.
Wheeler suggested that
-with- -.an- .association;. the.
county could "go after in-
dustry with a united front."
He used the recent De
Haviland Aircraft of Canada
Ltd. expansion prgject as an
example.
GEDC secretary Larry'
McCabe said, "There is
nothing wrong with forming
a loose association but 'I
would want to concentrate on
getting industry for
Goderich, not the county."
County development of-
ficer Spence Cummings
-explained that the county's
towns were not in com-
petition with one another for
industry but that the county
itself was in competition
with the -big c ities.
"An association would
serve just to acquaint you
with what's going on in the
rest. of thecounty," he said.
"But we should be able to
get that information now
without forming an ,
association," Profit
repeated.
Conunissioner of Works,
Ken Hunter, said he would
like .information on gover-
nment help available to
industry and government
contacts.
McCabe said that in-
formation could be obtained
from the county develop-
mentdepartment. .
Wheeler emphasized that
the meeting in Clintol was
just to determine if there
was such a need to form an
association which could
meet periodically. He said he
would be attending the
meeting himself -and asked
fora representative from the
GEDC to attend as well.
Those members present
stated they already had
other meeting commitments

statistics from the building
inspector's office can be
used as a barometer.
In a report to council from
inspector Doug Harrison,
both the number and dollar
value of permits is down
considerably. So far this
year the town has issued 12
building permits for a total
value of $36,900.
Half of that three-month
total was realized in march
when 6 permits were isued at
a value of $18,300. By
comparison, last year 19
-lermits were issued through
March at a value of $150,350.
