'Survival 0 seminar to be held One in four Canadian mar- riages eventually breaks up. While some pant and confu- sion are an inevitable part, of separation, the practical ad- vice of specialists and others who have lived through the experience can be earns mously helpful, notes University of Guelph pro- testor, Sam Luker, a clinical psychologist and court con- ciliator. As a result of this convic- tion, Prof. Luker has organized a one -day "Separation Survival" seminar at the University of Guelph on Saturday, April 11.E Specialists who will be taking part in this. informal seminar include Grant Campbell, a family Lawyer, April Steele, director ,. of Separation Support. Ser- vices, Gayle Davis, a marital and family therapist, ' and Professor Luker. "This is not a therapy-. workshop. The emphasis is on down-to-earth survival skills," stresses Professor Luker. Legal rights, handl- in stress and guilt,- children, uilt, children, sex and social life, finances and starting over are major topics which will • be discussed. Stiffen. admission standards An increased' volume of applications to The Universi- ty of Western Ontario this year may make it harder for high school students with marginal averages to gain admission to UWO, accor- ding to University officials. An 11.5 per cent increase in applications to Western from Grade _13 students could mean. that the 64 per cem rainbtiunf average re- quired for admission to UWO may have to be raised if the University is to stay within, its target maximum of 4,200 freshmen. That 4,200 figure represents the ceiling on ad- missions that the University can handle and still guarantee a good university experience for students, UWO Registrar David Chambers said. Enrolment in excess of 4,200 would pro- duce overcrowding in classes and higher faculty student ratios, he explained. Western's first-year enrol- ment in 1980 was about 4,300 students. Based on last year's acceptance rate, ap- plications this year would produce a freshman class of 4,800. Vice -President Academic Clark Leith said a 'cut-off average will not be deter- mined until after more com- plete information on the ap- plicants and their grades is available in May. The cut-off for admission to Western has been 64 per cent since Senate increased the minimum required average from 60 per cent several years ago, Prof. Leith explained. Dr. 'Chambers said March figures from the Guelph Ap- plications Centre show a -total of 16,500 applications to Western from current Grade 13 students. This represents an 11.5 per cent increase over last year compared to a provincial system average of 9.1 per cent. Applications from students who have already graduated from high school total 3,424, an increase of 18.7 per cent over last year. The system average in this category is up by 8.6 per cent this year. Dr. Chambers said ap- plication totals include those students who have selected Western as first, second, or third choice on their applica- tion forms. Approximately one-third of the applicants have selected Western as first choice, about the same rate as last year. The March statistics represent about 90 per cent of applications from Ontario Grade 13' students who in- tend to go to university. Ap- plications from non-current Grade 13 students are ac- cepted until August. Offers of admission will be sent to high school graduates an June 12. owl a. d 2 go rig 0 Prices effective thru Saturday, April 11th, 1981 Yourl' do better. at our...
