Huron Unit holds clinic for smokers who want to quit BY JOANNE - BUCHANAN The Huron Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, in co-operation with the Huron - Perth Lung Association, held a 'Smoking Withdrawal Clinic' last October and November. Twenty-five interested persons showed up at the first meeting Tuesday, October 21. By the last meeting, November 11, this number bad dwindled to 10. A follow-up meeting in February revealed that four out of these 10 had com- pletely quit smoking. The clinic was offered free of charge to all those people in the county interested in giving up the smoking habit. Volunteers donated lunch. Meetings consisted of films and speakers and even testing on a carbon monoxide machine. The evidence linking smoking to lung cancer is overwhelming. But it's not only lung cancer. Cancers of many types, as well as a variety of other diseases, are also linked with smoking. In Canada, nonsmokers now form about 58 -per cent of the population over the age of 15; a decade ago they had a slender majority of 51.6 per cent; before that, there were more adult smokers than nonsmokers. The Canadian Cancer Society, in co-operation with the College of Family Physicians of Canada, wants to tip the balance even . further in favour of the nonsmoking majority. Join the majority.
