Foy and his ideal BY JOANNE BUCHANAN Terry Fox, the young cancer victim who ran more than 3,000 miles on one leg to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society last year, has become 'a national hero. And perhaps nobody has embraced this brave young Canadian and his high ideals more warmly that the citizens of Goderich and area. They have opened up their wallets and their hearts, thus helping Terry and others like him in their fight against cancer. On September 12, the Goderich Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs, headed by Dianne Armstrong,, held a seven hour Terry - Fox Marathon of Hope phone-a- thon which was televised over . channel 12 in Holmesville. The Goderich- Clinton area pledged more than $15,000 during this phone-a-thon and from it • sprang an impetuous challenge by Goderich Police Chief Pat King who marched 54 miles during a 24-hour marathon 'around the Goderich high school track_ the following Saturday to raise even more money. Approximately 250 Goderich citizens turned up to march with him at one time or another that day. On Valentine's Day this year 400 candle bearers gathered in Court House Park for a prayer vigil organized by Ronnie Varga. The vigil was for Terry Fox who was undergoing treatment in hospital at the time. It was also for other victims of cancer and their families. Prayers were led by the Goderich Ministerial Association followed by a short march around The Square. Recently the Goderich Kinsmen and Kinette Club received plaques from the Canadian Cancer Society for their contributions to Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope. Huron Unit vice-president Ross McDaniel presented these plaques on behalf of the Society and noted that Ontario has raised $51/z million for the Marathon of Hope with $'h million of this coming from , Ontario and $60,000 coming from Huron County alone. This money will be put into a trust fund separate from other funds • and the interest will be used in three ways: to assist an• aspiring young scientist in cancer research; to aid selected ongoing projects in cancer research; and to help buy new equipment for and build new additions to cancer research facilities. With people like the citizens of Goderich and Huron County backing Terry Fox and the Canadian Cancer Society, the' hope grows ever stronger that someday soon CANCER CAN BE BEATEN.
