Bye for now, Laura Consumer Beat .. . studies insulation In -December 1980, Health and Welfare .Canada an- nounced a, temporary ban on the use of urea formaldehyde foam in situ insulation for homes in Canada `.The. ban followed wide -spread con- cern that improperly in- stalled UFFI caused seepage of formaldehyde gas into houses. Residents might experience various symp- toms, including headaches, nausea, eye irritations, skin rashes and respirator) problems. On February 4, 1981, CAC issued a press release ex- pressing xpressing concern that responsibility must be taken for the UFFI hazard. The federal departments of Consumer and Corporate Affairs,' -Health and Welfare and Energy, Mines and Resources, as. well as the Canada Mortgage ane Housing C6rproration and manufacturers and in- stallers must share the responsibility. CAC also feels that the government should provide a service to check hones for seepage and that financial aid should be available to consumers who may have to replace or remove the in- sulation in their homes. The following information attempts to answer some of the questions consumers have expressed about UFFI. Q. How do I know if for- maldehyde gas is escaping into my house? A. You should be able to smell it. It may irritate the eyes, inflame sinuses or cause skin rashes. Q. How can this be checked? A. Health and Welfare Canada .is not responsible for - testing. The National Research Council in Ottawa has a pamphlet on how to go about having your insulation, checked. The Enersave program of Energy, Mines and Resources has a list of private companies who will do the test for you and the type of charges to expect. Q. What causes gas seepage? , A. Poor formulation of 'the foam, which is generally the responsibility of the in- staller. Especially in a "tight" or resealed ho use, ie. aluminum siding, Also the foam itself acts as a sealant. Q. ' How do you fix the problem? A.
