Looking Back through old files
A branch of the Sovereign
Bank of Canada will open
soon in Goderich in the
Jordan block, in the store
just vacated by H.W.
Thomson. Mr. H.T. Rance of
Clinton, who will be acting
manager for present, is in
town attending to the
necessary arrangements.
This week things are
looking up all around the
dock; preparations were
being made for a general
start at the elevator, the
machinery at the lumber
mill is being repaired and
added to, and other work is
stirring. The last few weeks
nearly 200,000 cement bricks
have been brought to the
elevator from the factory on
the beach. They will 'be used
for the erection of the
machinery and weighing
flats.
The river opened up again
'on Monday all along the'town
front.
Mr. P.T. Dean, our well-
known grocer, is branching
out in .his trade, and will
shortly open out a stock in

Cheered on by the largest
crowds yet, hundreds of pee
wee hockey players battled
their way into the finals
today as Young Canada
Week neared its climax at
the Goderich .Memorial
Arena. More than 1,200
players representing 74
teams from Winnipeg to St.
John's are taking part in the
national eight-day com-
petition which started seven
years ago.
More than 50 employees of
Huron County gathered at
the county road depot in
Auburn Saturday morning to
honor Peter D. Patterson
who has resigned as county
engineer.
. A business, on East Street,
which has operated for some
75 years, haschanged hands:
For about half a century
known as Smith's Art Store,
the business has been pur-
chased by Carl W. Anderson
who has been the C.N.R.
telegraph dispatcher here
for several years.
Robert John Acheson, a
lifelong and prominent
resident of Goderich, died
Thursday evening in hospital
here. He conducted the
drygoods business of W.
Acheson and Son suc-
cessfully for over 50 years,
retiring six years ago.
5YEARS AGO
As of today, April 1, the
Goderich Psychiatric
Hospital will be operating in
the new capacity of a mental
retardation resource centre.
The patients of the hospital
have been moved to London
and Owen Sound. '
The Goderich Community
and Recreation Board
decided Thursday night to
eliminate summer day camp
and playgrounds from their
1976 program in an effort to
trim their budget for the •
year.
There wasn't much dispute
over the county budget for
1976 when council met in
regular session Friday in
Goderich. Although costs

the MacKay Centre Board of
Directors, The Centre will
have more insulation added
by a local contractor. This .
hopefully, will cut the cost of
heating the Centre next
winter.
The seating capacity of
MacKay Centre auditorium,
as set down by the building
inspector and the fire 'thief,
allows for 185 people to be
seated plus the actors taking
part in a performance.
There had been a number
of jobs not completed last
summer but these are finish-
ed now and the building has
been brought up to a safety
standard,
The Centre has been a
very active place all winter.
It is nearing the 300 mark in
membership. If you are 55
years or older and wish to
take part in the activities,
