Modern mini dance company to perform in Goderich
Dancemakers, a repertory
modern dame company, is
being brought to Goderich by
the Recreation Department
for two performances on
Monday, April 13 and
Tuesday, Apri1,14.
Since its inception in 1974,
Dancemakers has continued
its original policy of com-
missioning a wide range of
works by both international
and Canadian
choreographers. The
Company wants to assist
audiences to better un-
derstand the modern dance
art form and to introduce its
best aspects to the widest
possible audience, as a
means of making con-
temporary dance a vital part
of the cultural life of Canada.
During the two evening
performances in Goderich
five to seven dancers will be
featured in works from the
Company repertoire. The
works will be of varying
styles and moods and are
suitable for family en-
tertainment,

seem to be the most popular type of plays
her but GLT tries to offer a balanced
selection.
"Our recent productions of The Miracle
Worker and Witness for the Prosecution
seemed to go over well even though they
were serious dramas," says Mike„
Musicals are" not undertaken as often
because of the large number of people
needed to put one together. GLT's last
musical wasFiddler on the Roof, staged at
GDCI two years ago. Mike says it involved
'a cast of thousands.'
Most of GLT's plays are staged at the
MacKay Centre and the group has storage -
space there as welL There is a problem
though because the Centre only seats 185
people at one time and even if a play runs
for five nights, that means only 925 people
get to see it. If the membership is over 925
people (as it has been in some years), GLT
runs into trouble.
However, there have been im-
provements since GLT began performing
at the MacKay Centre aver 30 years ago.
Softer chairs have replaced the rickety old
wooden ones and the senior citizens' group
sells coffee during intermissions.
Approximately $1,000 is budgeted for
each play. This covers the cost of set
construction, props and costumes.
"Reg Bell is our treasurer and every
single cent is well spent or invested," says
Mike.
The majority of the money needed is
raised through the selling of subscriptions.
Patrons and advertisers cover the costs of
printing programs for each play.
GLT will hold a dinner in June, at which
time a new executive will be elected and a
program outlined for next season. At
present, the group members are trying to
get more involved with community events:
They are helping to sell tickets for other
productions being staged here and they
are lending lights and make-up to the
Christian Reformed School and Robertson
Public School for plays the students are
putting on.
"If any other schools or organizations
want help with their productions, we'll be
glad to lend a hand," offers Mike.
In turn, GLT needs help from the
community. It needs 'business people to
help with organization. It needs carpenters
and painters for set construction. It needs
women who like to . sew for moa --king
costumes. It needs people who can apply
make-up. It needs people to help with
lighting, special effects and technical
aspects. It needs actors and actresses.
"Even if - you don't know how to do
something, you can still join and learn,"
says Mike.
If you feel you would like to get involved,
call any member of the executive (Mike
Scott, Warren Robinson, Wayne Lyons,
Betty Etue, June Hill, Ruth Leonard,
KathyJenkins, Muriel Reinhart, Reg Bell
or Marj Macfie) or watch for an-
nouncements in this newspaper pertaining
to GLT activities.
Goderich is a theatre -oriented com-
munity and has every right to be proud of
GLT. But remember: GLT depends oh
volunteer effort to make it a success.
