A David and Goliath match
The 1980.81 Goderich
Industrial League curling
came to a dramatic con-
clusion on March 28 as all 16
teams competed in the
Championship Bonspiel.
The highlight of the day
was .the Grand Cham-
pionship - me. In a classic
David and Goliath (alias
Bogie) confrontation, the
first place Foresters took on
the surprising successful and
efficient G.D.C.I. Teacher
No. 2,(?) team.
The route taken to this
meeting by the two com-
petitors was radically dif-
ferent. By finishing first in
League play, the Foresters
were allowed to face teams
with the least successful
records while the sixth place
Teachers had to fight their
way to the top by defeating
two of the League's premier
teams.
The Foresters' first ad-
versaries of the day were
their female . counterparts,.
the Lady Foresters. Heather
Jewell, Vicki Culbert,
Eleanor Fisher and skip
Bernice Moore knew they
would need a few breaks ,to
defeat the very talented
Forester crew. But they
didn't get them. Forester
skip Cam Bogie totally
ignored the many distrac-
tions his female opponents
threw at him to lead his team
to a 6 to 3 win.
Huron Haven was the
second team to fall victim to
the Forester juggernaut.
The foursome of Steve Huff,
Claus Etzler, Jeff Kuran and
skip Bill Kuran had earned
the right to challenge the
Foresters by trouncing one
of the pre -spiel favourites
tcai 1863, ii for Behindtile
excellent work of vice -skip
Bill Robertson, last year's
champions handed the
• luckless Huron Haven unit a
12to 1 defeat. •
While the Foresters ap-
peared to be on an inevitable
path to the championship,
the G.D.C.I. Teacher No. 2
team started off on their
race . to glory by tripping.
Showing first -game nerves,
the Teachers curled poorly.
in their opening end of
competition against the A.M.
& G "GC's" and suddenly
found themselves down by
four.
Their come -from -behind
victory was perhaps an
omen of what was to come.
Bill Garrow and Dave Cloet
deserve special praise for
their efforts in this en-
counter.
A Cloet's take-out in the
fourth end counted three for
the educators and tied the
score. From that point on,
the hard pressed "GC's..
threesome of Dennis Miskie,
Joanne Jasper and skip Tom"
Jasper were unable to match
the determination of their
opponents and the teachers
had their first win 8to5,
The youthful and
aggressive G.D.C.I. Vikings,
no v stood- fn the Teacher's
path. The talented. Viking
unit of Del _ Mi:tchelmore,.
Steve Teraina, Lou DeWinter
and skip Mike Paquette were
confident of victory since
they had defeated the
Teachers In league play and

had looked very sharp in
their first game against the
Huron Health Unit.
In that confrontation, the
almost flawless execution of
the Vikings. prevented the
Health . Unit foursome of
Paul Dawson, Karen
MacKinnon, John Orr and
skip Laurie Paquette from
accomplishing mote than a
single point.. Despite the.
spirited and accurate per-
formance of , skip Paquette,
the Health Unit went down 8
tot.
The Viking's confidence
lasted until the fourthend
When shots by Shelley Warr
and Chris Connor put the
heat on and a slight miss by
the Vicing's leaders opened
the door for the Teachers to
take the lead. A very
crowded house in the final
end worked against the
Vikings who possessed the
last shot of the contest.
That last shot was forced
to be a triple raise into the
four foot by the excellent
guards put up ,by the
Teachers. When skip
Paquette's final desperation
shot came to rest the
G.D.C.I. Teacher No. 2 team
had their second upset
victory.7 to 5 and the road to
the Championship game lay
wide open.
Everyone knew that the
Teachers would need their
best game of the season to
defeat the superb Forester
team of Faye Ribey,
Jamieson Ribey, Bill
'Robertson and skip Cam'
Bogie. Tne Tea chefs-did.
he s did'just
that.
For seven ends a
newcomer to the club would
have thought the Foresters
were the underdog as The
Teachers enjoyed a lead of 6
to 2 ''at the halfway point of
the contest and an ap-
parently insurmountable
four point advantage with
only the final end to play.
Bill Garrow was the
standout in the early ends as
he rarely missed an op-
portunity to make his op-
ponents miserable while
Faye Ribey did the same for
the Foresters. Almost 100
people then witneksed the
strangest end of the year.
Skip Bogie asked his
teammates to draw the
house; skip Cloet asked his
teammates to remove them.
Bogie's allies obeyed their
orders; Cloet's didn't. When
the smoke cleared the
Foresters had four points;
the game was tied; the
crowd stunned; and the
Grand Championship contest
on its way to an extra end.
The extra end had all the
thrills of an entire match as
both teams curled extremely
well under the pressure.
Forester skip Bogie saved
his now famous "fertilizer"
shot for the finale and came
to rest in the four foot area.
_ Teacher skip Cloet, w.hn_was
the cornerstone of this
remarkable team all day
just missed the slippery
Forester rock and the most
exciting championship game
ended 9 to 8 for the excellent
Forester foursome. -
The foursome of Ribey,
Ribey, Robertson and Bogie
became the recipients of the
Signal -Star Championship
Trophy as well as individual
trophies provided by
Sheaffer Pen for the second
year in a row.
TheG.D.C.I. Teacher No. 2
team received second 'place
money and.. a special award.
They were voted the most
improved team by their
peers and were presented.
with the Charlie Crawford
Most Improved Team
Trophy.
Third place in . the
Championship Draw went to
the Local 1863 foursome of
Tom Profit, Charlie
Crawford, Glen Falkiner and
skip Jadt Kellough. The
union reps rebounded from
their opening game loss to
Huron Haven to dispose of
the Health Unit 5 to 1 and the
Lady Foresters 7 to 5.
Fourth place was a very
close contest. Huron Haven
