Less fuel needed
Maple syrup production on
several farms in Ontario will
be more energy efficient this
spring thanks to the Canada-
Ontario energy
demonstration program.
Ontario Minister of
Agriculture and Food Lorne
Henderson and Ontario
Energy Minister Robert
Welch jointly announced a
demonstration project which
is designed toreduce by two
thirdsthe amount of fuel oil
needed to boil sap to make
maple syrup. The project
will use reverse osmosis
systems which act like
filters to remove three
quarters of the water from
the raw sap.
"If maple syrup producers
throughout Canada use the
new process, a total of 3.9
million gallons of fuel oil
may be saved," Welch said.
Henderson added that On-
tario produces about a
quarter of a million gallons
pf maple syrup a year.
"Under-- the -old "'system,
about 40 gallons of sap had to
be boiled down to produce
each gallon of syrup, using
