It opened with the Opening Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and 0 Canada with Mrs, Gordon Kaitting as pianist. President, Mrs. Richard Buchanan, welt rimed all. The answers to the roll call, "Something I Accomplished this Winter", showed that the Members have had a busy winter doing needlepoint, crewel em- broidery, knitting, quilting' sewing, learning bridge, e Secretary, Mrs. Al an Stoll, read the minutes of the last meeting and correspondence was at- tended to. Achievement Day for the the 4-H project "Ready -Get Set -Sew" will be held in Auburn on May 4 at 7 p.m. Huron West District of the Women's Institute will be holding its executive meeting in the new Goderich Township hall on Mond y, April6 at 1:30 p.m. A thankyou mote was received from the Canadian Cancer Society for the donation from Tiger Dunlop W I and since April is cancer canvass month, kits ' were handed out to,,several members who will be can- vassing. Mrs. H. Hendrick demonstrated the craft of making `hairpin lace' which the members found very interesting. Another highlight of the meeting was having the three students from the junior grades at Colborne Central . School who par. ticipated in the public speaking contest at the school February 17, give their speeches for the benefit of the Institute members. Alex. Hoernig of Grade 4 spoke on "My Sisters -Sugar and Spice and All. Things Nice"; Steven Millian of Grade 5 spoke on "Girls";. and Lori Millian of Grade 6 spoke on "Annie Get Your Gun". The speeches were all very humorous and dramatic portrays of the subjects they had chosen and lluronview adjusting Huronview, Huron County's home for the aged, is being called upon more and more to fill the function of a nursing home, and it has been adjusting' to meet the. challenge, Administrator Wayne Lester told • The majority:of people•admitted-to Huronview to- „ day are people who need more nursing care, he ex- plained. Consequently a number of beds in the-Nor- mal heNor- mal Care are not being used. .. , To cope with the•need, the entire 38 beds of Ground Floor North•have been switched to heavy bed care, with arounilthe-cloekstaffing, he said. • He reported that as of last week, 296 beds at Huron - view were occupied and only 14 were empty. By this week he expected to have five of those filled, he add- ed. • He said that :while last month there were 39 names • on the waiting list, this month there are 21; some peo- ple diedand a lot were admitted to the home. • He told councillors' to expect questions why people have been moved around in Huronview, explaining it vyas to accommodate the additional nursing care. • He'also warned -council it /aces a bill of -$100;000 to replace the heating system in the Normal Care wing some time within the next two to three years. The system, which was installed in 1953,'has sprung some leaks, he said, and while it can be repaired tem- porarily there is no guarantee how' long the repairs will hold. He suggested. council should start planning to replace it in 1983. Council expenses only cover one year A story in last week's paper indicated town council spent over $7,000 in expenses for councillors at- tending conferences and seminars during the 1979-80 term. The expense report, in fact, only covers the year 1980. During that one-year period, expenses in the amount of $7,056 were approved for councillors at- tending seminars and conferences out of town. Former reeve, Eileen Palmer had expenses of. $2,193 during the year, most of which was spent at- tending conferences sponsored by the Association of 'Municipalities of Ontario. Councillor Elsa Haydon, president of the Ontario Parks Association,. had $2,077 in expenses. Other expenses ' included $1,289 for Mayor Harry Worsell, $775 for deputy -reeve Bob Allen, Stan Profit $336, Brian Knights $102 and Jim Searls $280. Councillors John Doherty and Jim Magee had no expense report for 1980. TOWN OF GODERICH BOULEVARD TREES The Works and Engineering Depar- tment, In conjunction with the Parks Depar- tment, are taking or. tiers for trees to be planted on Town boulevards this ,spring. Mrs. Dorothy Feagan, who recently returned home from an enjoyable trip•to England, gave a very, interesting report of an Institute meeting she attended while there and presented a copy of the English Insitute's yearly program. Brochures and English money that she displayed were of special interest to the mee�rrnnbers as was the fact that 'she had. made -a personal contact between the Tiger Dunlop Institute and the members of the Institute in England. As 1981 has been declared "The Year of the Physically Disabled", it was decided to have a! meeting on this subject in the next term program. Several members attended the "Parties to Please Your - _Purse" --course -in n Clinton recently. It was ,suggested that the Institute hold a luncheon and card party, probably the latter part of May. The April meeting will be held Thursday, April 23 commencing with a pot -luck luncheon at 1 p.m. Roll call will be payment of fees and as this is the annual meeting, the District President, Mrs. William Porter, will install the officers for the 1981-82 term and annual reports and standing committee con- vener reports will be given. Mrs. R. Brock, Mrs. A. Montgomery and Mrs. Ralph Jewell have been appointed the nominating committee. The president thanked all those who had helped with the meeting and the school students,,Mrs. Hendrick and Mrs. Feagan. Business toeing concluded, the meeting closed with the Queen and the Institute Grace after which members enjoyed a social half hour with lunch served by the social committee of Mrs. R. Brock, Mrs. A. Montgomery and Mrs. M. Montgomery. During lunch, Mrs. Gordon Kaitting and Mrs. Harry Brindley showed the members the craft of covering coat hangers. Euchre party Colborne Township Recreation Committee had another successful euchre card party on Thursday, March 26 and the winners were: ladies -Mrs. Monica Louzon and Mary Harman and, gents -Cliff Hackett and Dave Harman. The next, euchre card party will be Thursday, April 9. Social news The Irish Unit of the Bemiller United Church U.C.W. is planning a White Elephant auction and tea. There is no, admission other than bringing an item for the auction which is to be held in the church on Wednesday, April 8 at 1 p.m. Everybody. is welcome.
