As a Christian, I firmly believe in the Bible as God's inspired and infallible Word. I believe in God's directions as applicable to my style of living; therefore, when God directs, through the Bible, the loving use of corporal discipline, I obey. Many of His directions are to br found in the Old Testament. This means That His direc- tions are meant for non- Christians as well as Chris- tians. We are told to "Trust in the- LORD • with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding'' (Proverbs 3:5). We are told "Do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent His rebuke, `because the LORD disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in" (Prov. 3:11-12). A teacher, as a "kind and judicious parent" „should also use discipline in the classroom. As parents we are told to "Discipline your son, for in that there is hope" (Prov. 19:18a) and "Discipline your son, arid he will give you peace; he will. .bring delight to your soul" ( Prov. 29:17). Discipline and knowledge go hand in hand when we read "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid" (Prov. 12;1). Herdman at his best BY LORNA VINCENT Many local, music lovers missed the Joseph Herdman organ recital on Sunday, March 29 at St. George's Church. The small attendance made up in appreciation for lack of numbers. The interior of St,. George's Anglican Church with changing shafts of light filtering through the lovely stained-glass windows makes a, Perfect setting for organ music. Mr. Herdman was at his best in selections from Ger- man erman and French composers which covered a period from the 17th TO 20th century. No recital is complete without the music of Bach which began the program: The well-balanced ar- rangement of selected material went from highly dramatic to quietly meditative which brought out the full range and mellow tone of the newly renovated organ. It seemed to fill those soaring gothic arches with heavenly sound. The recitals which are becoming annual events should be well advertised in advance. It is a privilege for 'local music lovers to hear programs of this calibre as we have too little live music outside urban areas. Congratulations to Joseph Herdman! • Two more recitals will take place this season and do mark these on your calen- dar. May 3 there will be a duo piano recital by Joseph Herdman and Lorne • Dot- terer at the •St. George's Anglican Church. This pro- gram should be very special with two such outstanding musicians. It is not often that we have the opportunity of hearing two pianos. June 14, Stratford Boys' Choir, conducted by Gordon Scott will be on the agenda. All concerts take place at 4 o'clock. Tickets 'are available at the door, Let us hope that a good at- tendance will establish these programs as annual events and also show appreciation of local musicians who can compete with the best. GODERICH MEN'S SLOWPITCH LEAGUE ANNUAL SPRING MEETING Tuesday, April 7th Community Room, Grandstand: 7:30 P.M. ALL TEAMS MUST BE REPRESENTED ALL PLAYERS WELCOME fashion shops -Utacipline can ._Teal- to understanding as seen when we .read "He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correc- tion gains understanding" ( Prov. 15:32). Discipline guides one through life as shown in the passage "He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, - -.but whoever . ignores correction leads others astray" (Prov. 10:17). Discipline is valuable to a person, as seen when' we read "Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding" ( Prov. 23:23). . Reading this, and knowing this, it bothers me that some people question and, in some cases, oppose, certain forms of discipline.. It is interesting to read "The •fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,* but fools (Hebrew: 'eviyl - perverse, or morally deficient, person) despise -Wisdom • discipline" (Prov. ,1: 7 I . Certainly, there are ways to discipline, corpordl discipline bewg one. God, in His Word, gives us directions in the use of the rod (strap). Referring back to the passage of God as a loving father, wealso read for us "He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him" ( Prov. 13:24). This should also app- ly to the teacher as a "kind and judicious parent", Corporal punishment is for everyone, including children. We read •'Do not -withhold discipline , from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death" (Prov. 23:13-14 ), "Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will' drive it far from him" (Prov. 22:15 A question that arises is alit- That asking when, and on whom, should the rod be us- ed. Again, God makes it very clear: "Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgement" ( Prov. 10:13) , "Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge" (Prov., 19:25), and "Penalties are prepared for mockers, and beatings for the backs of fools ( Hebrew: Keciyl - stupid, or • silly, person) (Prov. 19:29). • I believe that I must raise my children as instructed by God: "Fathers,do not ex- asperate your, children'; in- stead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the LORD'' (Ephesians 6:4) . Part of His instruction„ of course, deals with discipline and the rid. Yours in Christ, Dale Matthies, Goderich. Goderich obituaries MRS.
