Public relations is the art of not 'treating' the public like relations. +• • The, CBC is making a April 2-8 le check week "Care, Savings and Safety" is the theme suggested by the Canada Safety Council fnr its Cra Check Week, April 2 to 8. These three go together if drivers want a simple for- mula for long, economical motoring. Today's society, demands smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient vehicles, but many drivers have not yet 'realized that closer at- tention to vehicle main- tenance is required to ensure that all systems operate properly. One instance ''has been . documented where a driver neglected such basic: maintenance as oil changes altogether. When the vehicle was a year old, and failed to start, it was found to have the original oil filter and original ' oil. Maintenance costs to that point would have. been around 4240,_111.e.. result was a complete engine failure and a repair bill in.. excess of two thousand dollars. Even with such minor items as oil changes, careful: attention to routine main- tenance constitutes more of a saving than an expense. W.J. Don Reid, district supervisor, Ministry • of Culture and Recreation, developed this theme in the keynote address, stressing looking back to understand the basic values which should be the base of recreation programs; planning for both short and long term; and striving for people involvement. Joe Pickering, chairman of Walkerton Recreation Committee, welcomed the delegates. Bunny Hare of Owen _Sound, Lake Huron Zone representative to OMRA introduced Mary Hare of OMRA board of directors who brought greetings from OMRA. Delegates attending the conference from Goderich were Doug Currie and Bob Cornish. Five workshops were offered under the leadership of -Bryan Peter of Seaforth, Clive Buist of Fergus,. Melanie McLaughlin of Hanover and Lynn Halliday and Mike Myatt of Owen Sound. President Clare Christie of Owen Sound conducted the business of the annual meeting. Nominations ac- cepted as 1981-1982 board of directors were: Keith Angel of Kilsyth; Bob Cornish of Goderich; Annie Dinniwe'l of Harriston; John Gates of Kincardine; Bunny Hare of Owen Sound; Fred Oehm of Hanover:: Joe Pickering of Walkerton and -Leo Renner Of Port Elgin. Jim Stone of Durham thanked Walkerton for its responsibility. Check houseplants Don't take your houseplants for granted. Now that they are starting to grow again, check to see whether they need repotting or fresh soil, says Bob Fleming, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food hor- ticulturist. As plants grow, their roots need more room to develop. If the roots are pot bound, repot the plant into a larger container orprune theroots. If you intend to repot, choose a container one size larger than the original one. Remove the plant from its pot by holding the pot sideways in one hand. Tap the bottom of the pot gently, and ease the plant out slowly. Shake some soil from the roots, and repot in rich fresh potting soil. "While transplanting, you may wish to divide or separate plants, such as ferns, to obtain more plants," says Fleming. If you have very large houseplants, Fleming recommends engaging the help of one or two people to ease the plant from its container. Shake some of the soil from th,e roots andprune Tightly, then repot into the same container with fresh potting soil. When pruning the roots of any houseplant, be careful not to remove more than one- quarter to one-third of the roots. "rlc Best in North 1m:rice a ve^.
