Vikings reach WOSSA semi -fine

The GDCI, junior Vikings
boys' basketball team reach-
ed Ake of 1110 ...
.WOSSA "AA" tournament in
Sarnia last weekend before
losing to Sarnia Central, the
team which went on to win
the WOSSA championship.
Friday, the Vikings won
their opening round game by
a decisive 5832 margin over
London Beck. The Vikings
dominated the game both of-
fensively and defensively,'
using an effective press and
several defences.
After building up an early
lead, the Vikings were able
to go t� their bench and play
even with Beck using their
second team.
Don McCatlum, who was a
standout for the Vikings in
)fietourent, :fid 17
points. Smooth shooting Ben
Melick added 13. Ken Lin-
ner, a midget age player,
had nine points, Jeff
Denomme got eight, Andrew
Telford had four, Paul Mc-
Cartney
o-Cartney two and Chris
Starkey one point.
Tony Kaslikjian had 17
points for London Beck.
Against Sarnia Central
Saturday morning, the Vik-
ings played well, but lacked
the manpower to stay with
the eventual WOSSA
champs.
The Vikings fell behind
Jane Rodger
wins top money
Forty ladies competed at
Little Bowl on Friday,
March 13 in a 3-6-9 tour-
nament. In this type of
tournament, the bowler is
given an automatic strike in
the third, sixth and ninth
frame's.
This was a six game, cash
tournament with a total of
$240 awarded. Jane Rodger
was top money winner, with
a high six -game total of 1528
plus a high single in the last
game of 313 to win a total of
Sao.
Other money winners
were: second high six, Peg
Stokes, third high, Addie
Graham, fourth high, Marj
Moore, fifth high, June
Horton, sixth high six game
total was a tie between Sib
Riehl and Carolyn Vincent.
In the three game highs,
top winners were Marilyn
Bannister and Ruth Oke.
Single game winners were
Mary Rivett, Dianne Leddy,
Sib Riehl, Ruth Oke, and Peg
Stokes.

guard, matched McCallum's
13 point effort in the semi-
final game.
Other Viking point -getters
were David More, who came,
in in the second half to score
six points and pull down
some important rebounds,
Andrew Telford, whose

100 per cent effort, with four

and Sevin 'Smith, with Iwo
points each.
Despite the loss, Viking
coach Lynn Meyers could
not contain his .enthusiasm
over the effortvut out by his

Juniors in finals
against Seaforth
The Lions' Junior girls
ringette team eliminated
Listowel in semi-finalWOAA
playoff action Sunday and
will advance to the finals
against Seaforth. Also on
Sunday, the Optimist Seniors
met Listowel for the first
game of their best -of -three
semi-finals and beat them 5-
2.
In the Junior game, the
local girls outscored
Listowel • 11-8. After the
. visitors took a 2-0 lead in the
first half, Lasa Kisch and
'Tammy Gibbons each scored -
to tie it up.
However, Listowel scored
again to take the lead, only to
have Goderich's Gibbons tie
it up again. But the first half
ended with Listowel in the
Lead again by a score of 4-3.
Kisch notched another
tieing goal at the beginning
of the second half, then
Listowel took the lead again.
Gibbons and Kisch then
caught fire 'and scored six,
consecutive' goals between
them before Listowel could
answer with two. Stacey
Rean scored the Lions' last
goal.
In the Senior game;
Goderich scored three
consecutive goals to win the
game 5-2. It was 3-2 for the
locals at the end of the half
on goals from Allison
Graham and Robin
McDonald with two.
Angela Alcock' and
Graham each scored for the
Optimists in the second.
Lose to powerful team

The GDCI senior Vikings,
finalists in the Huron -Perth
Conference, lost to a power-
ful St. Thomas Central Elgin
team in the WOSSA "AA"
boys' basketball tournament
Friday in Sarnia by a score
of 49-37.
The Vikings played a fine
game in the opinion of their
coach Phil Bugler, and had
nothing to be ashamed of id
their loss to the highly touted
St. Thomas team. The Vik-
ings stayed with Central
Elgin in the first half, and
trailed by only two points, 22-
20, a -t ham tune. -. .
Central Elgin then came
on to score eight straight
points early in the third
quarter to take the lead 'for••.
good. Central Elgin went on
to defeat the Sarnia St. Clair°
Colts, 62-55, . in the semi-
finals, but.lost the champion-
ship when they were upset
4847 in'the finals by the Sar-
nia Central Centaurs.

Goderich. Jim Costello hit
for seven, Ted Doherty and
