Large, traditional weddings are back in style Every bride may dream of her own special wedding memories but, mothers of today's brides have noticed that those memories are very much like their own. The only striking difference is . that the '80s .bride's memories are -preserved in color while., mother's memories are in black and white. • Still, hike saddleshoes, calf -length hems and rock 'n rat according to the brides of '55 the formal weddings of the '50s are back with all the frills. Today's. bride may wait a little longer for 'a wedding What the bride pays for that has soared in cost, but she's likely to opt for tradition at any price. For a while there seemed to be less formality in weddings that ,took place in natural settings. Now the swing, is back to the large, traditional weddings. Another change noted by many mothers of the bride is that brides are now older than they were 25 years ago. It seems today's young people hike to work for awhile and see _ the world .ar first, before settling into married life. ' Today's, bride, mere sophisticated than her peers of yesteryear, is responsible for downplaying attendants roles more than anything else, according to ' con- sultants and ` enordina%ra who have been assisting brides for decades. For the '80s many brides are cutting back 'on the number of attendants in their weddings. Begin your life together. with..... a dozen 25 years ago or their sisters eight to ten years ago, most of today's brides are asking fewer friends to stand up with them. The average number of bridesmaids appears to'be four this year. One wedding co-ordinator pinpointed a reason for the reduced number 4f maids and matrons of honor coming down the aisle with . bridesmaids, junior at- tendants, flower girls, ring bearers and groomsmen. "Girls getting married today are too darn „ in- dependent to need all the help they used to," she said. -They,do what. they.. want _ But then, you have to realize brides are older than they • used to be and that's why. they're so much more sophisticated." The accent on wedding clothes today is definitely on the romantic. Lace and ruffles, eyelet and em- broidery are given increased emphasis in the styles for this year's brides. For daytime ceremonies, the ornamentation may'vary from a suggestion ci dace at the sleeve or neckline of airy frocks, or to the use . of multiple lace appliques over bodice and skirt and on the vel. Come late day or evening, however, the materials and patterns take on greater sophistication. The lace hecoml'g sinker, and - more • lavish and so do the basic fabrics. As for styling, pleated effects, tiers and ruffles help to produce an almost Victorian look. Adding to the vintage appeal is the presence of quite a few trains and even a few bustle effects. As the bridegroom's fashions follow those of the bride, they gain in sim- plicity. Instead of numerous bright collies of "past years,. the suits are more likely to come in oxford gray or black or in tan or white. As the bride gains ruffles, her groom loses them. The very frilly shirts that used to be popular are being replaced with more subdued tucked or lightly ruffled ones. For _the _men n the wed- ding party, this year's ac- cent scent is on formality with the traditional tuxedo, morning coats and white -tie -and -tails outfits back in great number.
