In the ,clinch BYTD The GDCI senior Vikings boosted their record in Huron -Perth boys basketball to eight wins in nine games with a thrilling 59-57 victory over the Stratford Central Ramblers here Friday night. The Vikings led through most of the game until the Ramblers took over the lead in the fourth quarter. Goderich then rallied to tie the game and with five seconds left, Phil Aubin's tip -in gave the Vikings their margin of victory. Aubin wound up as the Junior Gagers lose first game BYTD The GDCI junior Vikings lost their first game of the Huron -Perth Conference schedule here Friday night when they were set down 48- 40 by the Stratford Central Ramblers. The Vikings led 34-19 after the first half, looking like a championship team in the process. They hustled and played with composure and displayed great, intensity on defence. However, the second half saw a complete reversal of form. The Ramblers began to exert strong pressure on the Vikings and the Vikes began to wilt. They lost their composure and committed many errors which the Strat- ford squad was quick to take advantage of. Dave.Odbert had 14 points to lead the Ramblers to vic- tory. John Brightwell added 12 points. For the Vikings Don Mc- Callum had 18 and Ben Melick 14. Jeff Denomme ad- ded six and Chris Pitre got two points. The Vikings travel to Listowel Friday to meet the Lords in the last game of their regular schedule. A win for the Vikings will ensure them of undisputed posses- sion of first place heading in- to the sudden death semi- finals next Tuesday. Ted Doherty and Mike Wedlock got eight points each and Dennis Aubin added two. Rob Froese had 19 for Stratford and Frank McCar- roll hit for 12. The Vikings led 30-27 at halftime, but a few defensive i lases enabled Stratford to stay close, setting up the tense fourth quarter action which provided a good deal of excitement for the several hundred enthusiastic fans who attended. The Vikings 'finish their regular schedule Friday in Listowel and will begin semi- final playoffs next Tuesday. Many GDCI w qualify for W 'BYTD The GDCI Vikings won the Huron -Perth wrestling championship here last Thursday. The Vikings topped the four -school field with a point total of 1451/2 points. Strat- ford Northwestern finished second with 129 points, Listowel had 67 points and South'Huron was fourth with 45 points. Seven of the Vikings were first place finishers in their weight division. They were: Brent Williamson, 38 kilos; Brian Shewfelt, 57.5 kilos; Mark Blaney, 67.5 kilos; John Sheardown, 71 kilos; estlers SSA Dave McDonald, 75 . kilos; Steve Boyce, 87 kilos,\ and Steve Berry, unlimited. Four other GDCI matmen were second in their divi- sion.. Tim Rawlings was the second place finisher at 47.5 kilos while Del Bedard, at 54 kilos, Rick MacDonald, at 75 kilos and Jeff Wood, at 87 kilos were also second. Mark Carmen was third in the 57.5 kilo class and Randy Anderson was third in the 61 kilo division. John Lalonde was fourth in the 64 kilo class. All these wrestlers qualify for the WOSSA chatripion- ships being held Friday and Saturday at Sarnia Northern Collegiate. Coach Ray Donnelly was naturally pleased with the success of his Viking wrestlers. He felt they deserved_ to be leaglie Cham- . .. pions because of the hard work and dedication they showed. Donnelly expressed the opinion that of all the teams he has coached in his 14 years of coaching, no team had ever shown the degree of improvement over the course of a season that the 1981 Viking wrestling team did. The Vikings were honored at a recognition assembly held Monday at GDCI. Midgets lose their gusto BYTD The GDCI midget 'boys basketball team stayed close to the Stratford Central • Ramblers here last Friday for the first half of the game, but from there it was all downhill. The Vikings trailed by only three points,18-15 at the hall, but wound up' losing by 25 points, 51-2&. . The"Vikings did play well in .the first half, running a controlled offence and could have led except for some easy baskets. which they missed. The Goderich team played ' aggressively on defence as well. In the second half it was a different story as everything Atoms advance in playoffs The Goderich Machinist Atoms defeated Petrolia 7-2 in Goderich on Saturday to advance to the second round of the OMHA playdowns. .The Goderich team dorrainated the game right from the start. Darren Stanbury opened up the scoring in the first period with an. assist from Jeff Boyce. Scott Garrow scored Goderich's second goal two minutes later on an assist from Byron Bowman; In the second period Goderich scored twice more before Petrone got on• the board. These goals .came from Larr-y Leppington assisted by Garrow and from David Brown assisted by\Bill Trebish and Stanbury. After Petrelia had Scored its first goal of the game, Goderich came back with two more to produce a five - goal lead at the end of the second' period. These were scored by Leppington on an assist from Garrow and Bowman; and by Garrow on an assist from David Brenner and Chris White. In the third period Petrolia scored its second goal orthe game and Garrow• scored one more unassisted goal for a hat -trick. Goderich. goalie Tom Durnin played an excellent -game in net to help the team onto victory.
