Villages near the English border situated on the banks of the River Tweed, produced the nubby herring -bone and hounds- tooth'checks. The local cloth of the Outer Hebrides Islands, off the Scottish coast was the warmest and the most durable' of the tweeds. This woollen fabric was called Harris Tweed, after the name of the main islands Southern district. It was completely hand-woven. A farmer would clip the fleece from his sheep and wash it in rain water. The wool was dyed from wild plants picked from the moors and rocky shores The cloth was woven on hand looms in the farmers' living rooms. The neighbours were then called to help with the process known as waulking. It was similar to the Canadian barn -raising or perhaps the pioneer quilting bees. The tweed was soaked in' am- monia and soap suds. Then, it was kneaded against scrub boards by hands' or even feet. The cloth was then strung up to dry in the wind. Tweed became the mast popular fabric in England's wool making history. People clamoured for bolts of the rugged tweed that had the scent of mist, heather and peat smoke of the Highlands.
