Keeping you
in stitches

TIP: To prevent stret-
ching when stitching a
woven fabric to a knit,
always have the woven layer
on top. •
Tweed is an ancient Scot-
tish fabric. Villages near the
English border situated on
the banks of the River
Tweed, produced the nubby
herring -bone and hounds-
tooth'checks.
The local cloth of the Outer
Hebrides Islands, off the
Scottish coast was the
warmest and the most
durable' of the tweeds. This
woollen fabric was called
Harris Tweed, after the
name of the main islands
Southern district. It was
completely hand-woven. A
farmer would clip the fleece
from his sheep and wash it in
rain water. The wool was
dyed from wild plants picked
from the moors and rocky
shores The cloth was woven
on hand looms in the
farmers' living rooms. The
neighbours were then called
to help with the process
known as waulking. It was
similar to the Canadian
barn -raising or perhaps the
pioneer quilting bees. The
tweed was soaked in' am-
monia and soap suds. Then,
it was kneaded against scrub
boards by hands' or even
feet. The cloth was then
strung up to dry in the wind.
Tweed became the mast
popular fabric in England's
wool making history. People
clamoured for bolts of the
rugged tweed that had the
scent of mist, heather and
peat smoke of the Highlands.
LAM Local 1863 presented a
Association recently. Left to
tendent for Huron -Perth a
Association who accepted the
cheque for $1,000 to the St. John Ambulance

nd John Wilson, chairman of the St. John
cheque and Goad Halley, Local 1883 president,:
Rain, rain, don't go away. Is, it too soon to hope that this mild spell will turn into spring?

Commissioners ask for honorarium raise
CLINTON - For the first time
in four years, the Clinton.
PUC commissioners,
chairman and secretary
have asked for a raise in
their honorariums.
-The increase will give PUC
commissioners $50 for each
meeting they attend and the
chairman and secretary will
receive $55 a meeting.
Presently the com-
missioners receive $25 a
meeting and the chairman
and secretary receive $30.
PUC manager Guss
Boussey explained that the
Clinton PUC hasn't asked for
an increase since 1977, and in:
the past '20 years have only
upped their honorariums
three times.
Mr. Boussey said the PUC
had been studying other
commissions in the area and
