Eiectric ranges
BY
LYNN TODGHAM
In a January 8, 1981 news
release, Andre Ouellet an-
nounced that requirements
under DCCA's Energuide
program have been extend-
ed to cover electric
household ranges.
As a result of regulations
under the Packaging and
Labelling Act, all such ap-
pliances manufactured after
December 31, 1980, must
carry' an energy consump-
tion label informing con-
suiners how many kilowatt-
hours of electricity per
month the unit can be ex-
pected to use.
The label will appear on
the exterior front or top of
the appliance, thereby .allow-
•ing consumers to select the
electric range which con-
sumes the least amount of
energy.
The program was
developed to help minimize
the use of energy and will
provide a savings for con-
sumers in the price they pay
for electricity. Also, it was
hoped that the Energuide
label would encourage
manufacturers to improve
energy consumption of their
appliances in order to
become more competitive in
covcre
the marketplace.
Although the program has
been in effect for just a year,
starting with refrigerators
and freezers followed by
dishwashers and clothes
washers, it was proved to be
great success. Many
-manufacturers have improv-
ed their appliances to
upgrade their energy
ratings. -'Look for the label,
buy the most efficient, and

New regulations
Government regulations
now allow the sale of these
bottles but only if they meet
certain safety standards
prescribed by the regula-
tions under the Hazardous
Products Ad.
The bottles had been bann-
ed following investigation of
injuries from 1.5 litre bottles
which broke. The ban has
now been rescinded but only
those which meet safety
standards will be allowed on
the market.
The new performance re-
quirements include a drill
test and a drop test. Both
tests are directed at controll-
ing flying glass, either from
dropping from kitchen
counter heights or knocking
together at points with weak
glass.
The regulations also in-
clude quality control pro-
cedures and require that all
1.5 litre bottles carry a label
informing consumers that
they should handle them

designs.
Men as'shoppers
Supermarket researchers
say male grocery -'Shoppers
are on the increase and that
their shopping habits differ
from women. Male shoppers
tend to be impatient, im-
pulsive and rarely use a
shoppmg list or coupons.
Men hurry through their
shopping, skipping aisles
and then doubling back, in-
stead of proceeding up and
down in an, established pat-
tern.
attern. Men tend to shop Bite in

nience foods than women.
Female shoppers

supermarkets, are more
likely to try generic brand-

men in store lineups. Women .
shop less frequently than
