Three teams
battle for first
curling place
With two thirds of ' the
season now completed, the
battle for first place in the
Goderich Industrial League
▪ is restricted to three teams.,
The Big Three' consists of
Local.. 1863, AM&G "GCs"
and the Foresters., All three
have only experienced
defeat once this year. .
The Local 1863 unit record-
ed. their eleventh win by
e f-eatlag-La-La-dy
Foresters tet tot Charlie
Crawford and "Boom
Boom" Profit curled ex-
tremely well for their team

ends when the lady foursome
showedsigns of a comeback.
Leading the Lady
Foresters in this attempt
Were Eleanor Fisher and
Heather Jewell. Both Jack
Kellough and Bernice Moore
complained that, after last
Week's candlelight curling,.
the game seemed Much
duller in total light
There was nothing dull,
however, about the contest
between the AM&G "GCs"
and the Huron Health Unit.
Dennie Miskie was
outstanding for the "GCs" as
they fought back from an
early deficit to take a' one,
point lead in the seventh end.
Fine -shots by Laurie Pa-
quette gave the Health Unit
a chance for victory in the
final end. Rip jack Ma,eKin-
non's last shot appeared on
target until the last few feet
when it suddenly veered
away leaving the "GCs"
with another point and their
eleventh win.
While the "GCs" had to
wait until -the last shot in the
eighth end to- learn of their
fate, the Foresters had to
wait even longer. The match
between the U. and 1
'foresters and the 4 and 8
GDCI TeaChers No: 1. unit
Losses by the Health Unit
and Huron Haven allowed
the Vikings to move up into
second. Just as .the Health
Unit's loss came on the final
rock so it was with Huron
Haven. Strong curling from
Bill Kuran and Claus Etzler
had moved the Haventfour-
some. back into contention
after falling behind early in
the match.
Their opponent the_GIIX.I.
Teacher No. 2 foursome,
however, .was not about to
crack under the pressure.
Chris Connor and Dave Cloet
had erijey0 excellept games
throughout but it fell to Bill
Garrow to make the deciding
shot Garrow delicately rais-
ed a front guard into the four
foot circle and the Teachers
frantically protected it for
the remainder of the end to
claim a well earned 7 to 6
victory.
The GDCI win brought
their record to the 'mu 'mark
‘10#143PC
4'he contest was an ex-
cellent one that featured tri-
ple and double takeouts;
freezes; hit and rolls and
very powerful sweeping.
Teachers Bill Worsell and
Del. Almeida were par
-
Ocularly. sharp as they com-
pared their skills with the
- -talented Jamieson • PJbey
and Dennis Lebrun. '
In a close contest such as
this one, it often falls to the
skips to decide the winner.
Althotigh teacher skip
George Sutton curled over
his head -all night it was still
not good enough to defeat the
cool, intelligent perfor-
mance of Forester skip Cam
Bogie as the Foresters
claimed a 6 to 5 win.
Second place is also oc-
cupied by three teams but
only one moved up during
thepast week and even they
appeared headed for defeat
for most of thegame. The
GDCI Vikings dropped
quickly behind 4 to 0 after
three ends to the Champion
Office "Silver Brooms" but
just as. the thought of their
lirstatictory beganeto enter_
the minds of the Champion
foursome the Vikings Wane -
ed back to score four in the
fourth and tie the math.
Despite the enthusiastic
efforts of Barry Page and
Paul- Mulligan their young
opponents took control of :the
game and finished strong to
record a 10 to 6 triumph. The
resurgent Vikings were led
by Steve Taraba, and Mike
Pacruette. •
and you guessed it, they too
are in a three-way tie for the
remaining "A" , draw posi-
tions. The Maitland Lady
Golfers moved up to this
vantage point with a crisp
win over the Elementary
Teachers. . .
. Behind, the fine' .work...of,..
Kay Duncan and Penny
Peters the Lady "swingers"
tripled ;the score on the.
educators. 9 to 3. Donalda
Macdonald and Don Bud -
nark put up a strong defence
but when the golfers are on
they are a very tough team
to overthrow.
The next position in the
standings is also homefor
three teams. Fisher Builders
and unampion Sales Office
won to join the GDCI
Teacher No. 1 team - who
have been patiently waiting
for them to catch up for a
number of weeks.
An "tmeXpeeted" triple
takeout ..retulted in a
decisive three ender for Jim
Bell and his Fisher team-
mates late in their match
against the AM&G Hospital
No. 1 unit. Although the tri-
ple was the big shot of the
contest the Fisher foursome
made many more as they
overpowered AM&G.9-to-3.
Sue Ritchie proudly wear-
ing number "33" proved the
.old saying "You're not get-
ting older, you're getting
better" as she provided the
edge in the Fisher win. Vice
skip Craig Cass curled very
well but he too admitted that
he was hooked on candlelight
curling and found the normal
version rather mundane.
The shot of the week
award goes to Pete Wanner.
Skip Wanner saved his great
shot to the very end in their
confrontation with the
Teacher Ink or anization.
Superb efforts by Jim
-1%We-it and Rim Ritchie
throughoutthe game com-
bined with equally fine per-
formances by Monica Page
and Bill Hayward to keep the
_.._gartieiri a constant state of
flux. Thi ineiaiuify con-
tinued to the ultimate con-
clusion as the Teacher Ink
Whit -placed two well- hidden,
rocks into the 'house and
prepared to celebrate.
Only one shot remained for .
Pete Wanner. He must draw
the four foot circle! He did;
Champion Sales Office won;
Ink lost and so ended another
hectic evening of Industrial
League Curling!

Vikings have
'sweet revenge'
BY TD
The GDQ junior boys
came through in the clutch
Thursday in Stratford in the
battle of the onttendefeated
teams in the Huron -Perth
Conference junior basketball
standing, defeating the
Stratford Northwestern
Huskies, 56 -36.
Coach Lynn Meyers
regarded the victory as
sweet revenge over the team
that eliminated the Vikings
in last year's playoffs.
Meyers felt he got the best
game that his five starters
have beea able to put
together this season.
Ben Melick, Chris Pitre,
Jeff Denomme, Don
McCallum and Andrew
Telford played with intensity
defensively right from the
beginning of the game and
prevented the Huskies from
penetrating their zone. This
forced the Huskies to shoot
from outside and Andrew
Telford tote down rebound
• after rebound from the
defensive boards for the
Vikings.
On offence, the Vikings
were able to move the ball
around to the open man and
make the best shot selection
