The churches attitudes and theological understanding are even greater barriers. . .' These were some of the 'conclusions • reached by 50 people meeting recently at Cedar Glens Conference Centre in Bolton, Ontario. The participants represented various parts of the United Church of Canada from • coast to coast. Approximately one quarter-' of them had a significant physical or mental handicap - another quarter were . parents of handicapped U.C.W. gets new study kit The February meeting'of Victoria Street Church U.C.W. was held in the church on February 2, at 8 p.m. Leader, Mrs. James' Robertson, opened with a poem for the new year. A singsong of new year. hymns was conducted by Mrs..F. Barker with Mrs. R. Harrison at the piano. Mrs. James Robertson, in charge of Devotions, used the theme, "Partners", which tied .in, with the program that followed. Scripture from Romaps 12, verses 4 - 21 and several appropriate poems were read. Mrs. John Wood gave a most enlightening and in- formative talk on the 1981 study kit - "Partners in the Gospel, in Mission, in Justice and in Crises". She'bd many posters on display, whieh will prove helpful when studying these important subjects. • Business arising from the minutes of December's meeting were read and at- tended to. Mrs. E. Linner reported on'Huron-Perth Presbyterial which was held in Brucefield Church =January 26. It was voted to give a donation to Meals on Wheels. Used "stamps 'have been given to Bible :SoCiety, Benediction was pronounced. Harmony s Circle, Unit I served a dainty' lunch, after which, a social half hour, was spent. The need to reassess the theological understandings of the church, was the area .that received the greatest attention at the consultation. Participants felt strongly that for.:mnany years the ministry of persons with handicaps bad been denied because of an over emphasis on ministry to persons with.. handicaps, There is great spiritual. strength among many persons with significant handicaps and the chureh would be greatly enriched if it recognized and welcomed their ministry. Awareness education is a major task that needs to be addressed to help the church see persons with handicaps as whole. people, The goal of such education would be to help all church members, whether handicapped or non handicapped, to recognize their interdependence and to learn from each other. Physical, and social ac ceptability is an important area and various strategies were developed to encourage the church to examine .and_ make more accessible its structures and programs: • The church should assume an advocacy role. where it supports handicapped' Persons in their struggles for human rights and justice. Having identified there areas for the United Church to concentrate on during and . following-, the International Year of Disabled Persons 41981), the various par- ticipants assumed' respon- sibility , for insuring that the recommendations will be addressed by their churches at the ' earliest opportunity. With this network of concerned people having been . established across the country, the participants felt optimistic that. significant steps will be taken .within The United Church of Canada Goderich Little Theatre donated a $300 cheque to the MacKay Centre for Seniors last week.. Are you troubled by the thought that Our Lord was some sort of male chauviidst? He wasn't. No man ever earned the love and trust of women -more quickly thanOur Lord. "Why de you talk to me, a Samaritan?" the woman at the well asked Him. And when He had finished talking to her, her life was change& "Why are you wasting all this good ointment?" they asked the sinful Woman whor when Jesus werA to sup with` the Pharisee, washed his feet with • her tears and dried them with her hair. "Many sins are forgiven her," said.. Christ to the offended Pharisee, `Because she has loved much." How do you think that woman looked on Jesus? Why did He call His mother `Woman'? Be sure it was not because Christ did not love and respect her. There are two ex- planations for the term. One is that; in Christ's mane, it was a gesture of respect, equivalent to our use of the word `lady? The better explanation ties in with the fact that this was the occasion when Christ performed. His 'first public miracle. When He said to His 'bother that' His time had not come, He was signifying that it would be after His death, ("my time") that He would perform stupendous miracles. But looking on the gentle maiden who gaVe Him earthy flesh, He paid her the greatest compliment, in all history: Christ talked to her -in the generic sense: "Woman ..." . Not "My mother," ' not "Daughter of Eve," but "Woman" • - that wondrous creature who, with God the Father, gives human life; and now through God the Son gives eternal life to the soul. The successor to Eve, the first `woman, '•the. mother of the new race whose head is Christ.. • What Christ. Was saying to her was: "How many tears has woman shed because one woman succumbed to sin! Ire you,' Woman, those tears shall be turned to joy .- beginning right now at. this ,wedding, feast in Cana of Galilee(!" • No wonder Mary went and told the officials: "Do what he tells you!" They did - and their em- barrassment was indeed turn d to joy. Mary, for all time now, is not ' just a woman but The Woman - the woman who shall fulfill Scripture and crush the serpent's head.
