Pahners.ton half a million in debt
PAIXEMON - > a lint,
press conference,
Balmersoon's Mayor David
Burns said the town's
current financial
predicament is comparable
to a ``natliraldisastee."
Funds, presumably
misappropriated, combined
with bank interest charges
have resulted in debts of
_about .ha 1f a million dollars,
he indicated.
Mayor Burns said that
because of ongoing court
proceedings, he could not
comment on specific charges
and the identities of those
charged. However, he said a
writ has been issued against
one individual to recover a
portion of the money, and
that thetown. solicitor was
expected -to.... make • a
recommendation, on
February 9 conceriiang the
other parties who may have
— -contributed to the loss •-
The mayor announced that
a special auditor's report
revealed that tv the end of .
November 1960, the debt
amountedto about $413,000.
In addition, other financial
irregularities included
approximately $79,000 in
uncollected costs of local
sewer improvement projects
and a $24,000 Wintario grant
shown as a receivable item.
The debt amounts to
$516,000, . and at current
rates, this means Palmer-
ston is paying about $260 a
day in interest on thdebt.
Mayor Burns emphasized.
that the ,pouncil wouldn't
recover the money through -
local taxation, but hopes to
obtain some relief from the
provincialgovernment.
He added that the com-
ments he has heard in-
dicated that Palmerston,
people are -very sup-
portive" of their coancil.
