Consumers' beat Computerized pricing not popular BY LYNN TODG.tL4M - Over the last few years, the supermarkets have tried to introduce, computerized pricing. This means no pricing on the shelves of the goods you buy, which in turn mans that consumers do not have the choice of pur- chasing the cheaper produce, because they cannot compare`the prices of the items on the shelves. The only time consumers see the • prices of the items they buy is as it is punched in at the check-out counter. CAC, concerned about such a systeeni, formed a committee which has worked hard to .mill. _ their - aims. These aims are: alerting the consumer to the advantages and disad- vantages of supermarket computerization which is moving into Canadian stores, and communicating the concerns and attitudes•of the consumer to the To date, 37 of a possible 60 pee wee hockey tempo have signified they intend to play in the Young Canada Week tournament here. The Goderich Graduate Nurses' Club met recently and decided to send a cheque to the Dr. Graham Memorial Fund. 5 YEARS AGO The Concerned Citizens' Committee in Goderich stepped up their activities this week in their fight to keep ° Goderich Psychiatric Hospital and other general hospitals in the area open. AskTom. He fills .out the 111 Recordof Employment perfectly every time an employee parts company. When you're in good company, stay in good form. Tom is the personnel and finance man for a medium-size company. And he knows that one of his responsibilities is to fill out a U1 Record of Employment form every time an employee has an interruption in earnings. He knows that if he doesn't get it right the first time, he may haveto do it again. So Tom took the time to get the booklet "How to Complete the Record of Employment" from his nearby Canada Employment Centre. Leaving in good form. The Record of Employrhent is one way we can make sure no one gets short-changed and no one gets overpaid. This saves time and money for everyone involved. Tom found out that the most common mistake is in reporting the. "Insurable Earnings". Insurable earnings are not 'necessarily the same as payroll earnings. Because. Tom fills out the ROE accurately, ex-employees ddn't have to come back to him for changes. And neither do we. It's just good businesg to be in good form. At Unemployment Insurance, we process about 4,000,000 Records of Employment every year. Last year, employer mistakes in filling nut the form cost at least $125,000,000 in overpayments. Plus the cost,of recovering those.overpay.mints and penalizing or prosecuting. We're out to cut down that 5125,000,000. And we're going to do it, together. 1. Public interestis high in -all-proviater s.Ruf,- as -yd.., -no - legislation seems imminent in Alberta . and British Columbia. Manitoba has introduced legislation requiring item price ret- ention, but to date it has not, been implemented. New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoun- dland, N.W.T. Yukon and Nova Scotia have no sign of computerized check-outs, yet, but CAC members are interested and have been informed of the problem in event the issue will . surface in these provinces. The report of the depar- •tment ' of Consumer and Commercial Relations in Ontario concluded that almost 90 percent of the consumers questioned wanted item pricing retained. The supermarkets have agreed to continue item pricing on a voluntary basis while they research the "development of improved _. staff ..,- irking-- techniques and the refinement of other price information programs". CAC Ontario was not convinced, that, this was a lasting solution and held a "prices -on -parade" in Kitchener. London, Stoney Creek, Toronto and Waterloo. A press con- ference was held in Toronto and received coverage from all the major television and radio stations and newspapers in the area. -Quebee ' is the I;;pnly province with itei i ' price legislation. CAC Quebec is still reviewing the legislation because of the many ex- ceptions allowed. Legislation is slow in coming throughout the. provinces in Canada, but it is the only way that consumers can be guaranteed price retention and monitoring of the 'computerized check-out system.
