GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11,1981 -PAGE 7
Cardiff home from trip
by Debbie Ramey
Huron -Bruce MP Murray
Cardiff recently returned
home from a trip to France
Germany, Sweden and
Finland where he was part of
a committee looking into
successful export
marketing.
In June of 1980, Mr. Cardiff
was norninated to a commit-
tee trying to further expand
Canada's export markets,
particularly in the area of
manufacturing. In the 'fall,
meetings were held with
businesses from throughout
Canada. Mr. Cardiff said it
was felt that they should look
-at countries that are suc-
cessfully
uncessfully export marketing
and meet their officials.
The final report of the
committee is due in the
House of Commons on
March 31. Mr. Cardiff left
Ottawa on January 9 and the
first country the committee
visited was France.
Some of the things discuss-
ed in France were what type
of export financing , is
available, the types of pro-
jects they were exporting,
capital projects - even areas
where they were co-
operating, with another coun-
try and export insurance..
Mr. Cardiff said France had
been very successfpl in ex-
porting and, subsidizes ' ex-
ports, but that it would be
disastrous if all exporting
countries got into a financial.
battle subsidizing exports.
Following the trip to
France, the committee
travelled to four different
locations in Germany, in-
cluding Bonn, Koln,
Deusseldorf. and Hamburg.
The MPA met with the bank-
ing community or went to
two ,East Block countries
and the rest flew to
Stockholm, Sweden, in-..
eluding Murray Cardiff.
There is little or no sub-
sidization for exporting but
the banking community is
very heavily involved in ex •
-
porting projects.
Mr. Cardiff said the one •
thing he liked about Gemany
was the .small amount . of.
government interference.
He'said enterprising officials
get out' and get business
without a lot of government
involvement.
"The German people ap-
pear to be very aggressive
and upfront in their business
dealings•. I think it's a good
way of doing business," he
said
products that they're
building are of good quality.
Sweden has 80 trade com-
, missioners posted
throughout the world who
have the initiative to go
ahead if they think there is a
market for some product.
The Swedes have a lot of in-
terest in Canada because
they have businesses here.
The Swedish are, however,
heavily in debt. They have a
deficit of 18 billion a year but
their social programs cost a
lot of money.
Income tax rates are high,
averaging out to about 50
. percent of income. Interest
is deductible from income
tax and'as a result, most peo-
ple are heavily in debt as
well. While in Sweden Mr.
Cardiff took advantage of
The Swedish are v6ry pro-
ud of their country and very
aware of • preserving the
natural resources and en-
vironment.
"Their environment
comes first. We could take a
lesson from them," Mr. Car-
diff said.
Manufacturers rely heavi-
ly on the exporting of
manufactured goods and the
the opportunity to speak to
some of their agricultural
representatives.
He said young people in-
volved in industry'are'sent to
school for three or four years
to train to become exporters.
One of the qualifications for
enrolling in this school is the
ability to speak three
languages — Swedish, Fin-
nish and usually English.
This training would cost
about $2 million dollars per
year ( Canadian money) .
Companies in Finland are
interested in industrial', ex-
pansion and have a bid on a
project with some Canadian-
" companies "which would
certainly help the export) of
some of our manufactured
goods,'‘Mr. rdiff said.
Committee hopes
to promote town
The Goderich Tourist
Committee hopesto escalate
-the active promotion off the
town of Goderich.during its
two-year term.
High school teacher Doug
Bundy was elected chairman
of the committee for the
term 1981-82 and following
the initial meeting of the
c a tittee in January alist
of priorities was established.
The basic aim and priority
of the committee is to
establish and promote the
Port of Goderich as a tourist
attraction. Bundy said the
.committee will -pursue -that
objective of attracting
tourists through advertising,
bus tour promotions, the
operation of the Tourist
Information booth and , ex-
change
xchange visits with neigh-..
bowing communities.'
The to hast information
centre . on Victoria Street is
an integral link to the
community for tourists,
providing information about
accomodation, food, services
and tourist attractions. The
committee will also co-
ordinate .and promote -local
events like • Festival of the
'Arts, Founder's Day and
Friendship Days:
Goderich boasts of being
the prettiest town in Canada
and the committee will
encourage residents . and
merchants to promote the
community be keeping it a
clean, • safe aril attractive
place to visit.
Promotion is a major
function of the committee
and it is intent on
establishing working
relationships with com-
mittees of council and ser-
vice clubs to better co-
ordinate activities and
promote them.
"We feel we should be
spending more time on
advertising and promoting
