Minister's Study c ristians don't pretend half- enou BY THE REVJREND ROBERT J. CROCKER, RECTOR., ST. GEORGE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH Are Christians pretty generally a group of hypocrites? Do they pretend to believe in Adam and Eve, or the Virgin Birth when, in fact, they don't? Sometimes it looks that way, I'll admit. It looks that way because Christians, like people out- side the Church, sometimes find it difficult to believe, and it helps if you try to believe. That's what the per- son meant who said that faith is betting your life that there is a God. The more you bet on it (and who can bet more than )lis` life?), the more certain you become that you have bet on a win- ner. ' It looks that way too, because you may ask a Christian why he believes, and he can't always supply an answer, at least not an answer acceptable to an unbeliever. It doesn't necessarily follow that if you know something, you can ex- plain it. Half the people who drive cats do so very well, but they can't explain what happens when they turn on the starter switch. This doesn't mean 'that' they are poor drivers. They know how to drive. They can make it work. - So itis with faith. It works for those who have it, and this is enough for them. They don't want to explain„ it. In fact, they may feel that they have spoiled . it somewhat if they ,can ekplain it; it loses something in the' explaining. I don't think that this ought to be true, but I'm afraid it In Memoriam service held for late _member There was a large at- tendance at the W.M.S. Afternoon Auxiliary, ICiox Presbyterian Church meeting in the church parlour Tuesday, January 20. Mrs. Gordon Henderson, president, opened the meeting with a minute's silence followed by prayer as an In Memoriam for one of the members, Miss Isabel Matheson, who had passed away. • Members then joined in the - scripture reading of Psalm 23, -The Lord. is My Shepherd, followed by the singing of the hymn, Stan- ding At the Portal, with Mrs. Ron McCallum as pianist. Minutes of the last meeting and the December executive meeting were read by the secretary,' Mrs. J. Horton and the tre rer's report was given b Mrs. G.G. MacEwan. Mrs. O. Falkiner, corresponding secretary, read letters of thanks received from Mrs. William Bisset, Mrs. George Stokes, Mrs. J. White, Miss Ida .White, Mrs. F.M. Hall and Bob Diggon. A Christmas wish and poem was read from Mrs. Don Croft. • Several members were interested in attending the annual Presbyterial meeting -to be held in Seaforth the following day and a new song to . be used at the .Presbyterial meeting was then made familiar to the group by leader Mrs.. C.H. Edwards. Mrs. Girvin Young presented the Fellowship of the Least Coin as she read an interesting article entitled "Demonstration of Reconciliation", followed by members joining in the prayer. Mrs. Ira Dickie then in- troduced the study book, TV special The Singtime Association of United Churches presents. its February TV special en- titled "Cast. Your Bread Upon the . Waters", Satur- day, February 14 at 6:30 p.m. on CKNX TV Channel Eight. Host, Grant Preston talks to people who have put their trust in God. Special guests include Bill and Sharon Hopkins, the Reverend Ted- dy Smits and the Reverend Douglas. Brydon. Also featured will be soloists, Ruth Graham and Lindsay Hill, accompanied by Ellen Hibbert. This study was given further interest as Mrs. Dickie, Mrs. • C. Edward and Mrs. . G. Kaitting gave a personal interview 'which' was a repeat of the, interview ,between Glen Davis and Mr. and Mrs. McMullen, missionaries in this , field, While they were in Canada before returning to India last year. Mr. and Mrs. McMullen and their family visited Goderich during the year as guests of Miss Ida White and were welcomed'by many of the church mem- bers at asocial get-together in the church parlour. So it was with special interest that members were in- terested in learning more of their work. After a short question and answer period, Mrs. Dickie closed the study with prayer. The president then closed. the meeting with a New Year poem followed by the closing hymn, Blest be the Tie, and prayer. Afterwards all en- joyed a social half hour together. 66.66•• Most important. of all, they know they can't get along nearly as well without faith. Not only does it work for them, but they need it. Is this illogical? Certainly it's no more so than saying, as many do, that there may be a God but they don't need him. Christians are saying that there has to be a God. What about Adam and Eve? Adam means "mankind". So it is a story about mankind in relation- ship ,.o God. It means that God made mankind, andthat mankind is a product of the mind of God. Man has mean- ing only if he is considered in this way, as a child. of God. Otherwise, what is there in- herent. in man that makes him valuable? Why the brotherhood of man? To the Christian there would be no purpose in living if there were no God. But, if there It a God," then life becomes precious and wor- thwhile. There is, then, some reason for being alive. We admit it. Christians don't always act .as though they believed in God. But that's hardly dishonest. Coyne to think of it, I don't think Christians pretend to believe in things at all. They don't pretend half enough. CRAFT SUPPLIES •Ilton faces, Beads.
