New fair.
building
EXETER - The 1981 Exeter
Fall Fair should have a new
agricultural building to
house all livestock exhibits if
present plans materialize.
Dalton Finkbeiner said
that it is hoped the new
building will be ready by
Septemaser if,ail the paprer
work and the grants can be
coirnpleted.' •
The proposed building will
be locatedeast of he South
Huron Rec Centre and its
dimensions would likely be
144 feet by 60. feet.
The fair board is presently
looking at a couple of con-
struction plans, but prefer
the 60 feet width size, which
would allow for four rows of
stalls for animals.
Mr. Finkbemer noted, "We
saved a lot of material from
the old grandstand and that
will go a long way 'in
providing material."
Grain corm
maj-or crop
Grain corn is one of On-.
ratio's • major 'Crops; say the
marketing specialists at the
Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture" and. Food.
Unlike sweet corn on the cob,
canned or frozen, grain corn
is used for animal feectand
in the preparation of. many
food and non-food products. ..
There are about two
niacin acres of land used to
grow grain corn in Ontario.
In 1980 production was ap-
proximately 185 million
bushels. with a money value
in excess ss ,of 600 million
dollars:• This represents the
highest, value of any single
crop in the province. Ontario
produces about 85 percent of
all grain corn grown in
Canada.
° About two-thirds of the
crop is used for animal feed
which 'in turn produces
animal products . such as
meat, millt milland eggs.. Ten
percent of the crop is ex-
ported and the rest is used to
make high -fructose sugar,
distillery products and other
consumer products.
• By means of a wet milling
process, grain corn is used to
'make hundreds of products.
Some well-known corn pro-
ducts are corn oil, corn-
starch powder, pudding
powders, jams, ice-cream,
pie fillings and icing sugar.
But the list doesn't stop
there. Non-food products
such as paper, textiles,
wallboard and baby powder
are also made from groin
corn.
This list -indicates haw im-
portant grain corn is to On-
tario's economy. Many jobs
are involved because of its
wide range of uses. And the
grain torn crop continues to
create increased demand,
not just here, but. world-
wide, for the production of
many food - products. The
future for Ontario grain corn
is very promising.
