Rasps are red....
Roses are popular gift
flowers throughout the year,
but -because of theirroman-
tic associations, they are
especially popular for St.
Valentine's Day.
Tea roses are the long-
stemmed varieties that
feature large flowers, while
the shorter -stemmed
sweethearts feature s%nnaller
blooms and are commonly
used in corsages.
Both types of roses are
available in a wide range of
colors.'' -.Some of the most
popular varieties are:
Samantha, a long-stemmed
red; Sonia, a long-stemmed
salmon pink; Co -Ed, an in-
termediate. length yellow;
and Jack Frost, a short -
stemmed white.
To prolong the life of your
roses, use the preservative
provided ` by most florists
free of charge. This sugar
and antibacterial agent
helps keep passageway:
open in the stem.
Occasionally, you'll fink
roses drooping in the vase.
—This condition, called ben(
back, is caused by an air
blockage in the
passageways," says
Hughes.
To correct the problem,
use scissors to cut 2.5 cm (1
in.) off the bottom of the
stem while holding the stem
under water.
Value down
EXETER - For the second
year in a row, the value of
building permits in Exeter
has dropped by over`°
$1,000,000.
The total value of permits
issued in 1980 was $1,00,515
according to statistics given)
by Exeter's building• in-
spector B ria n Johnston.
The 1979 figure was
$2,179,571 and the 1978 total
was $3,858,545.
"It reflects a winding
down of the economy,"
commented Exeter Coun-
cillor Bill. Mickle in
reference to the sharp
decline. Noting that the only
U• najor increase wasin
government buildings, (the
new police station) he
suggested governments
were the only group?that had
money to spend.
Only seven new homes
were built last year for a
value ct $376,000 compared
to 14 in the previous year at a
value of $726,000. However,
Mr. Johnston pointed out
that this was above average

The Goderich Gospel
Temperance League has
made arrangements
whereby the Reverend J.H.
Hector, known• throughout
the English speaking world
as the "Black Knight", will
address the meeting on
Sunday and deliver a lecture
in the Temperance Hall on
Monday.
When the carpenters of
this town who are employed
erecting station buildings
along the line of the G.T.R.
arrived at the depot here
Monday morning, they were
notified that work was
suspended to February 1.
The Goderich . Summer
Hotel, dncltldinggrounds and
chattels, is for sale. The town
holds 8 first mortgage for a
$10,000 loan and the hotel
owes four years' insurance
paid by the town and arrears
of water and electric light
ratestothe amount of $411.
Monday was an ex-
ceedingly dusty day and on

Health and Welfare
Minister Monique Begin
recently released the results
of a survey on the carbon
monoxide delivered by 41
brands of cigarettes sold in
Canada. The brands tested
accounted for more than 80
per cent of the cigarettes
purchased in Canada during
1979.
"I am concerned that
cigarette smokers cannot
reakEly inform themselves of
the range of carbon
monoxide levels in different
brands," the Minister said;
"and 'I have requested the
Canadian Tobacco
Manufacturers Council to
take action to ensure that
carbon monoxide levels are
printed on cigarette
packages.°'
High concentrations of
carbon monoxide interfere
with the blood's ability to
carry oxygen. _\ Long-term
exposure to carbon
monoxide has~ been lined to
the development of coronary
artery . disease,
atherosclerosis, chronic
respiratory disease and fetal
growth retardation.
Miss Begin noted that
there is a growing awareness
in the health care field of
smoking's potentially
negative effects on the fetus,
adding, "I strongly advise
women not to smoke while
pregnant and to stop
smoking in advance of- a
planned pregnancy."
The survey was carried
nit for the department by
Labstat Incorporated of
Kitchener, Ontario, using
cigarettes purchased in June
1980. Tar and nicotine levels
were also measured during
the survey. Some 69 per cent
of the tar measurementts..
taken and 59 per cent of the
nicotine Measurements
exceeded the values listed on

The Minister noted that
both the advertised tar and
nicotine values and the
carbon monoxide values in
the attached table were
based on measurements
using' standardized smoking
machines'
-The measurements
provide a useful com-
parative guide for people
who do not change their
smoking habits when they
change to milder brands,"
the Minister said. "The best
change in smoking habits, of
course, is to stop smoking
completely."
