Humidity problems
BY
LYNN TODGHAM
Maybe I should begin with
an 'explanation of the term
relative. humidity: Humidity •
is the amount of water vapor
in the air. The total amount
of water vapor the air 'can
hold depends on ,the
temperature; warmer air,
can hold more water vaPit
than colder air. When
humidity is expressed as a
percentage of the total water
vapor the air can hold at the
existing temperature, • the
result is • called relative
humidity.
In very cold weather, the
relative humidity outside'
nay' be very high, but when
outside air at -20 degrees C is
warmed uP.',o 20 degrees .C.
the Relative humidity may
• fall to 5 percent or iess.
The effects of dryness are
well-known. including dry
skin and static electricity
discharges. , But' more.
serious effects can develop
such as respiratory pro
blems and damage to fur-
niture and houses from wood
shrinkage. Most of these
problems can be helped: by
increasing relative humidi-
ty. 'aith^nph -Once 2.;brunk..
wood stays shrunk:
Some people dispute the
claims that humidification
can save on heating costs.
These claims are on the
assumption that higher
moisture content in the air
r or higher relative, humidi-
ty I makes lower
temperatures more,
tolerable. Whether, or not
you are able to lower your
house temperature after
humidification, remember
that -humidifiers' use elec-
tricity. so there may be' rib
net savings.
• It is easy to be misled into
thinking that, if low humidi-
ty is bad, high must be good.
Actually, high humidity Can
be a greater problem.
Serious water damage can
result' to, paint, wallboard,
and wood and condensation
- occurs in -unwanted places,
when humidity. is too high. A
clear sign • of over -
humidification is condensa-
tion on the inside of panes of
double -glazed windows. If
your home .already exhibits
this tendency, you should be
looking at better ways to
lower the humidity, not raise
it.

Be sure to check the in-
sulation in your home before
installing a humidifier. If
there is no vapor barrier,
humidification can damage,
insulation and wooden walls,
because excess humidity
will condense inside the
palls.,
There are two main types
of humidifier: plenum
.models and console models.
Both work in the same
fashion, usually by dipping a
pad of material into the
water. Air is forced through
the pad by a fan, allowing
water to evaporate into the
air.
Plenum -type humidifiers
are mounted on the warm -
air plenum of .a forced -air
heating system. Humidity is
dispersed uniformly
because the heating system
is ducted to all rooms of the
house.
Forced -air furnaces
generally have humidifiers
built in of the time of
manufacture. However,
these are usually passive
"plate" . devices_. which will
not likely provide adequate
humidification in very cold
weather. Proper levels of
humidity are attainable -only
with models employing a
rotating drum or belt.
Console -type humidifiers
are the Only option for
homes without forced -air
heating. They have several
disadvantages. In cold
weather, most will require
daily filling. They take up
floor space and sometimes
are" diffictult to• .position
where moisture will cir-
culate evenly. At least one
humidifier per floor will be
required.
Both types of humidifiers
must be cleaned regularly.
especially in areas with hard
water. Failure to clean the
machine will result in a
build-up of slime. which pro-
duces a disagreeable
-swampy" odor and scale.
which reduces the
humidifier's overall effec-
tiveness.
