Tip: It is best to use thread
and fabric • of similar
sources, for example,
mercerized cotton or cotton -
wrapped polyester On Cotton
or natural fabrics and nylon
or polyester threads on syn-
thetics. Knits and stretch
knits of any fibre, however,.
are best sewn with cotton -
wrapped polyester nylon or
polyester thread because of
the greater elasticity of syn-
thetic thread. Thread should -
be chosen, keeping in minis
the fibre content, weightand
colour of the fabric.
Nowadays, Shiny rustproof
pins are available at your
local fabric store. But until a
century and a half ago, they
were most uncommon and
very valuable.
Today pins are cut and
shaped from a single piece of
metal, wire and automatical-
ly putt in containers by
machine. .
When pins of iron and
brass were made in England
and France six' centuries
ago, they were fashioned by -
hand with a strand of wire
coiled around the top to form
the ' head which frequently
fell off. Pins were such a lux-
ury thatfor long time well-
to-do women were given
"pin money" by their
husbands to buy pins on
special occasions.
Pins hold such an ordinary
part in everyday living that
their heritage has long been
forgotten.
Don't risk
frostbite
In a winter like this, you
don't have to be out.skiingor
snowmobiling to risk
frostbite. If it is cold enough,
it may nip you while you are
doing your. errands or
shovelling the snow.
St. John Ambulance first
aid experts say frostbite is
easily recognizable • as the
skin becomes waxy white
and numb. Warm the area
gradually by body heat. If
your face or ear is affected,
cover the frozen area with a
• gloved hand until . normal
colour and feeling return.
For frozen fingers or toes,
remove tight - boots or
gloves. A good way to thaw
your band is to ,place it in-
side your clothing under
your armpit.. Feet may be
wrapped in a warm blanket
or snuggled under a compa-
nion's jacket.
Don't rub with snow and
don't rub. Where blisters oc-
cur, they should be covered
lightly with a sterile dress-
ing and bandaged carefully.
Under no circumstances
should the blister be broken.
• If frostbite is severe, see a
doctor immediately.
