zoning amendment
Town council endorsed a recom-
mendation from planning board
requesting the rezoning of a parcel of land
on Bayfield Road for the construction of a
omni mall
The recommendation passed by a 5-4
margin in a closed session of council with
Reeve Don Wheeler and councillors Stan
Profit, Jim Semis and Elsa Haydon voting
against the proposal.
At its'January6 meeting, planning board
approved a zoning ammendment,
redesignating the land highway com-
mercial, to permit the construction of .a
building with a health spa, convenience
store and doughnut shop. The land is the
only remaining highway commercial
prupert, until Ino extension lS
cimpleted.
Some members of planning board ex-
pressed a concern about vacancies in
existiang malls bit were assured that
leases have already been signed for the
proposed mini mall.
Councillor Elsa Haydon said another
mall on Bayfield Road is poor planning in
consideration of vacancies in existing
malls.
"It's just poor planning. Suncoast Mall
has vacancies, the new mall has vacancies
and now` there will be another, mall," she
said.
The proposed mall will be located on the
south-west corner of Bayfield Road and
Suncoast Drive.

Dear Editor:
The Huron County
Christmas Bureau, operated
by Family and Children's
Services, has completed
another successful project of
assisting families at
Christmas. This is due large-
ly to the efforts of a number
of dedicated volunteers in
the community who co-
ordinate the distribution
centers and whoare assisted
by many individuals and.
groups in the community
who provide facilities, dona-
tion of gifts and money.
In 1980, . the" Christmas
Bureau assisted 200 families
and 475 chikt en in having a
happier Christmas_ Families
were referred by social ser-
vice agencies, ministers and
service clubs' m the county
and requests were co-
ordinated through our office.
Each family was given an
appointment at the center
closest to their own home
and assisted with their shop-
ping at the center by
volunteer staff there. As a
result, each child received
one new toy and one nett ar-
ticle of clothing under, the
Wee on Christmas morning.
In your area we would
have been unable to provide
this service without the
capable assistance of Mrs.
Diane Armstrong, the co-
ordinator of the, Christmas
ureau in Goderich- She
agave many hours of her time
to bring some pleasure to
others and deserves recogni-
tion for her service to people.
In order to operate the
center appropriately, Mrs.
Armstrong spent • many
hours organizing the re-
quests of specific children;
shopping for suitable ar-
ticles, collecting donations,
and then setting up, obtain-
ing staff and, distributing
gifts from the centers. Her
contribution to Family, and
Children's Services and to
her community was im-
measurable and invaluable.
We musi also acknowledge
the contribution of service
clubs throughout the county -
to the Huron County
Christmas Bureau. In smile
areas they spent many hours
distributing, collecting and
sorting boxes for donations
of new toys. Many service
clubs made financial con-
tributions to our budget of
almost $10,000 which also
provided funds for families
to buy Christmas dinner.
Individuals all over the
comity spent the year knit-
ting so that children corning
to the centers could be pro-
vided with warm mitts.
The Salvation Army in
Goderich and Wingham
allowed us the use of their
buildings and Captain Perrin
and Lieutenant Koops spent
many hours working on our,
behalf.
