o grant 'here
The. Ministry of the Environment in-
formed town council in a letter that
direct grants for proposed sewage.works
or water works projects will be,reviewed
by a committee and there will be a
special priority rating system. The letter
said the elimination • of .prevention of
health hazards and impairment of the
environment are the ma in considerations,
of the committee. The need t'o provide for
growth- will be another priority. The
towns application for a water works
project will not be eligible for a grant.
Flow down
A report from sewage treatment plant
supervisor, Gerry Fisher, indicates that
the total gallons passing through the
treatment plant has declined since 1975.
A six-year review showed a decrease in
the gallonage over the past three years.
Commissioner of Works, Ken Hunter,
said the plant may not require expansion
since the separation of storrn and
sanitary sewers has 'caused a direct
decrease in the gallonage.

Interest too low
The town of Lincoln, Ontario is seeking
support from other municipalities to
raise the interest rates on overdue taxes.
The Municipal Act sets a maximum
interest charge of 1"4 per mit per month
or 15 per cent per annum: The town of
Lincoln claims that borrowing rates have
escalated to the point that the interest
rates on tax arrears should also be ad-
justed to compensate. Goderich charges
1 per cent per month andreferred the
letter to the finance committee for a
recommendation.
Town borrows
Goderich town council passed a bylaw
Monday authorizing the borrowing of $1
million to meet current expenditures for
the year. The town estimates revenues
for 1981 in the amount of $5,244,473 ex-
cluding reserve funds and tax arrears.
Fire alarms
In the month of December the
Goderich Fire Department responded to
seven alarms, five in town and one each
in Goderich and Colborne Township. The
approximate damage ^ resulting from
fires in town was $10,000 and $22,500 in
the f ires in the two townships.
