The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-01-14, Page 18I 1 PA(3E16 --GRDE (H SIGNA L STAR, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14,1981 ni top and ottom It is getting very lonely at the top had the bottom of the Goderich Industrial Curling League. One team alone now knows only the taste of suc- cess while one other knows nothing but disappointment and defeat. To the happy half of the' twosome first Local 1863 stands at the top of the state - dings with a perfect 7 and 0 record. In .order to maintain their enviable position the union foursome had to defeat the previously unbeaten AM&G "G.C.'s". The match was the highlight of the evening as both teams curled up to their reputations "G.C.'s" Ron Klages curled very well despite a nagging lave in- jury but the star of the con - 'test was union skip Jack Kellough. The game went right down to skip rocks in the final end and _ .it _ was here that Kellough demonstrated the precision needed to'skipan undefeated team as he engineered a flawless raise take out to end the Hospital foursome unblemished record6to4. . et)n the ice next to this ex- citing confrontation, the Champion .pion Office "Silver - brooms" maintain their "perfect" record as well as they dropped a 12 to 3contest to the Huron Haven team Despite many moments of fine curling, the ,Champion Office unit has been unable to find the formula of vic- tory. • • Even benching skip Barry Page -under -the -pretence of illness Was not enough to overcome the excellent curl- ing of the H&H boys. Par- ticularlystrong 'for the with ners were John and Bill Kuran while Paul Mulligan gave it all the enthusiasm and effort anyone could ask for but • all' for naught. Perhaps if Champion gave Jim Waiter an honourary position.:. • . The Silver Brooms should be' able .° to . take heart, however, from the Elemen- • tary Teachers who scored their initial win of the season 8 %o oveiiMthe. Teacher wdt..:.I.nA rare s,Iiow of ,pro- fessional 'courtesy, the Teacher Inc. foursome allowed their cohorts a three ender in thesecond and a four ender in the fifth to en- sure that their opponents los- ing streak might finally end. In addition to Marty Bond and Co's generosity, the fine shooting. of Donalda Mac- donald and Doug Yeo made the difference in this happy event for the moulders of- to- day'S youth. While first aplace: is the solitary ttaEm of Local 1863, second place is very crowd- ed. Four teams share a hold .oft this position. Although most teams would find se - mold niece acceptable at this time' the Forster fn rsome find it very strange and disappointing. After stealing most of the headlines last year with their championship form the Foresters this year find themselves out of the limelight lost in the abyss offs "second" place. An opening night loss to the AM&G "G.C.'s" and the fine play of Local 1863 have kept the Forester team out of first place. Since the first night; the Foresters, led by Cam Bogie • and Dennis LeBrun however have won six in a row. The Forester unit took a measure of revenge for their first loss as they defeated the AM&G Hospital No. 1 team 13 to 3. Gerry Ginn provided some key shots for 'the win- ners while Elmer Taylor'and Jim Rourke both had brief moments of glory. One of the Foresters six wins was against the young GDCI Vikings. This loss to last year's champs is the on- ly loss of the season for the surprisingly successful students. In their seventh match of the year, the Vik- • ings showed their impartiali- ty towards theirteachers. They will treaf all of them very, roughly! After defeating the GDCI Teacher No.- 1 team a few weeks ago, the fierce foursome of Mit- chelmore, Ter'aba, DeWinter and Paquette were just as nasty to the GDCI Teacher No. 2 unit. A perfectly played three ender in the seventh end broke a close game wide open for the Vikings and despite steady curling by teachers Shelley Warr and Bill Garro* allow- ed the students to coast to a 7 to d triurnf11 o The GDC .L Teacher No,• 1 squad found life at the Maitland Club a _tittle more enjoyable as theY downed the Fisher Builders 12 to 6. A big' five ender in the second end put the teachers in the drivers seat. • Nevertheless, the Fisher foursome led by the positive.,: attitude `and considerable skill of Jim Bell came back. The, never -say -die builders were only a roll away from tying the match in the seventh end but Bell's takeout stayed open by the Teacher skip George Sutton who made one of his rare shots to preserve the, win. Special mention must go to. teacher Del' Almeida and Fisher vice Sue Ritehie for their performances. The two feminine .four= softies of the Industrial League had .different takes last week. Birthday girl Laurie Paquette was able to overcome the tactic of the "old age" joke to lead the Huron Health Unit to a very close 11 to 9 victory over the Lady Foresters. Paquette's expertise was especially evident in the third end as the `aging' nurse • helped the Health Unit score an impressive six ender. The Lai y Foresters demonstrated • some filar. feminine forms of their own . in the sixth endas they bounced back with a four point end. Skip Bernice Moore and Heather Jewell were key members in this big end and throughout the game for the unfortunate Forester brigade: - I'he Lady Golfers held up the honour of female curling by overwhelming the Cham- pion Sales Office 10 to 6. Lynn `Todgham was very. sharp for the winners as her! rocks put early pressure on the sales reps throughout the match. Fittingly _ it was Monica Page who enjoyed an equally strong game for the losers. ^rear.. This play resembles football more than GDCI senior Viking basketball as a Seaforth player throws y guerhand pass while a teammate blocks ale pass blocker Jim Costello during Friday's an league game. The seniors won the game 71-29. ( Photo by Cath Wooden) Novices shut out Parkhill The Goderich Novices kept iParkhill off the score sheet Saturday in Parkhill to record a victory with a 3-0 score. • Andre Cauchi scored what • • • proved to be the winning goal at 7:38 of the first period on a shot assisted by Tim Harrison. Jeff Hodge added Goderich's second goal with three minutes left in that' period. Sean O'Brien drew •, • • • an assist on the goal. After a scoreless second period, the locals' last goal was netted in the . third by Harrison.,wjtJ n unassisted eff ort ad ; curlers inBroom trainin, Tuesday afternoon ladies curling was off to a good start with three very com- petitive ,games. Christmas turkey and rich desserts did nothing to slow down this „agile, happy lot. Kay King with her team of Karen Kert, Cathy Morris, and Vicki (Albert proved formidable opponents against Mary Ann Demme sey's team of Penny Peters and Gerry Zurbrigg.. Lynn Todgham's hams, Shelagh Strlly;.Gert Wilson and Emily Crew had to work hard and well together to beat Nancy MacKinnon's team of Joanne Jasper, Johnine Strickland and Heather Jewel. Heather showed us all how to throw draw weight consistently. It is good to see Joanne back with us this draw. Phyllis Durst led her group of Jean McGee, Joanne Hood • • and Georgia Ball toa narrow victory over Kay DiuicauI'>s Girls of Betty Moore, Sally MacEwan and Carol Hunter. Although Sally's skill with a needle surpasses her skill as a curler, she managed to thread her way to the button. Carol sporting her New Year's cap didn't miss a shot. Latest curling fashions were exhibited by Kay King in the form of pretty floral long johns which keep you baking feminine as well as warm. All ourTuesday ladies are truly in ,terrific form to begin training for the big event* the end of theyear- 1U1! WORSEI,Liiiiii0i4. Remember last year, Our ladies team lost on the Very last rock. It was a great game to watch, Much better than the Silver Broom which was held on•the same day, • We don't plan to let that happen again.
