Improving :Sailors play to win
The Goderich Sailors
continue to improve in OHA
intermediate C standings as
they played Mt. Forest to a
12-8°. win Friday night in a
game which saw only eight
minutes in penalties.
Tim McLean and. Steve
Meriam were high scorers'
for the Sailors with three
goals apiece.
The locals started out
strong, taking a 4-1 lead in
the first period of- play.
Kevin Meriam opened the
scoring' for Goderich with a
successful shot at 6:05.
Sandy Fitzgerald followed 30
seconds later with the
Sailors' second goal.
At 7:46, Tim McLean made
it 3-0 with his first goal of the
game assisted by. Paul Kelly
and Wayne Rau. A minute
later, an easy shot from Mt.
Forest's P. Love bounced off
Sailor goalie Dennis
Fleischover's pads and into
the net to record the visitors'
(first goal.
Steve. Meriam got
Goderich's fourth goal on an
unassisted effort at 14:21 of
the opening period.
The Sailors completely
overpowered ML 'Forest in
the second period as they
netted six'goals compared
with one from the opposition.
In the first three minutes 1
play, McLean and Meriam
both scored.
Then followed mearly nine
scoreless minutes before the
Sailors opened up again with
a goal from Wayne Rau''at to the Wingham
10:55. Mt Forest notched Genie time is'S: 30.

only to have Rick Freiin,
Steve Meriam, and Graham
Hamilton answer with three
rnore goals for the Sailors to
make it 10-2 'at the end of the
second period.
It was Mt. Forest's turn to
skate over the Sailors in the
third period. The visitors
scored six times, one a'short-'
handed goal, an the Sailors to
lessen the goal differential.
The Sailors kept ahead
however on goals by McLean
and Kevin Meriam to end the
game with a:12-8 score.
The Sailors travel to
Harriston Wednesday night,

The GDCI wrestling team
hadsome good showings in a
tournament last. Saturday at
Sarnia Northern Collegiate.
`The tournament featured a
high level d competition
with 17 teams from centres
such as Sarnia, London,
Windsor, Woodstock and
Chatham. Some weight
classes . had asmany as. 26
wrestlers competing and
competitor had t'o finish in
the top six in their lass to
score points for their. team.
The Vikings had six
wrestlers place in the top six
of their division.
Tim Rawlings was sixth at
47.5 kilos and - David
McDonald was fifth in the 75
kilo class. Two GDCI
wrestlers finished fourth

The GDCI senior Vikings,
buried last year's Huron -
Perth basketball champions,
the Seaforth Golden Bears,
71 - - 29 here. Friday. The
victory was the third without
any losses for coach Phil
Bugler's Vikings. The game
-was Seaforth's first league
start of the season.
Jim Costello had a hot
hand for the offensively
potent Vikings, Tinging in 24
points. Dennis Ailbin had 13
points and brother Phil had
10.
Theodore Doherty hit for
seven -for the Vikings. Danny
Freeman, Rob Plunkett and
Mike Wedlock had four
points each. while Mike
Murphy and Joey Morrissey
chipped in with two points
apiece. F.F. Madill Mustang's.
The Vikings travel to Friday the Vikings are at
Wingham today (Wed-. home to the Central Huron

Midgets win' first

The GDCI midget Vikings
won their first game of the
season here Friday,
defeating Seaforth 49 - 23.
The Vikings are now 1- 2 in
league play. They have two
games this' week, today
(Wednesday) in Wingham,
and Friday here against
Central Huron (Clinton).
Coach Myles Murdock saw
'considerable imp Toy ement-
in his team's defensive play
against Seaforth, and felt
they were beginning to hit
the open man more often but
that the offence still needs a

lot of work.
Geoff Chase was the
game's top scorer withro14
points for the Vikings. Dinish
Weerasooriya, with eight,
and Daryl Madge, with
seven points, also had good
games. Joe .Melady, John
Thompson and Andrew
Carruthers each had four
points while Mike
McCallum, . Paul Brenner,`"
Greg Leddy and Kent
Feagan had two points
apiece.
Barry Campbell was the
top Seaforth scorer with
eight points.
Steve Boyce in the' 87 kilo
division and Steve Berry in
the unlimited class were the
fourth place finishers.
Brent Williamson placed
third in his 38 kilo class.
The , best showing by a
Viking was Brian Shewfelt's
sesond , in the • .61 °kilo
category. Shewfelt woo
seven of his eight fights, a
very demanding schedule for
a one day tournament. -
The Vikings swing into
action again Saturday in
another large tournament at
Kitchener's Cameron
