Niagara team wins BiueandWhite

The GNI , Vikings won
their third consecutive
Huron -Perth Conference
game here Friday when they
doubled the score on the
Seaforth Golden Bears, 50 -
25.
Ben Melick had 22 points
for the winners. Don
McCallum added 10. Chris
_ itre _got.-.eight_points...and_
Jeff Denomme had four'
points. Checking in with two
points apiece were Dave
More, Andrew Telford and
Chris Starkey.
Ron. Godkifi and Dave
Murray- lad six points each
for theGolden Bears.
The Vikings led 26 - 12 at
half-time.
In league play this week,
the Vikings travel to
Wingham Wednesday and
then on Friday they play at
home against the Central.
Huron Redmen. Saturday,
the Vikings will be par,
ticipating in a tournament in.

The Vikings had some
good competition here
Saturday in the annual GDCI
Blue and White Tournament.
A strong Niagara District
championship team, . A.N.
Myer, won the tournament
with a 39 - 38 victory over
London Banting.
A.N. Meyer reamed the
finals by edging Sarnia
Central 47 45 scoring the
winning basket with just four
seconds remaining. John
Carlesso scored 14 points,
including the winning
basket.
The Niagara Falls crew
had no problem disposing of
Stratford Northwestern
Huskies, 47 - 27 in the semi-
finals. Carlesso again led
with 12 points.
London Banting reached
the finals by edging the host
Viking squad 43 - 40 in their
first game. Gord Glendon led
London with 17 points. Ben
Melick" fair12" `and Chris
Pitre nine for Goderich.
The Vikings got off to a
slow start and were down by
15 points early in the game.
Coach Lynn MeOrs'eliikings
played strong defensively in
the seconl half and almost
managed to pull it out.
Banting then defeated the
Medway Cowboys 43 - 34 in
the semi-finals, led by
Glendon's 19 points.
A.N.• Meyer got 12 points
from Mike Lalacich and 11
from Bart Maves in their one
point victory over Banting i
thermal.
After losing to Banting the
Vikings completely out-
classed Woodstock to reach
the Consolation finals. The
Vikings got a strong effort
from Kevin. Smith who.had,21
rebounds, completely
dominating the defensive
boards. bon McCallum had
23 points for Goderich, Ben
Melick had 12 and Smith
added five.
The Vikings playing their
fifth game within a 24 hour
span, ran out of gas against
Sarnia Central in the .con-
solation final. The Vikings
led 18 - 16 after the first
quarter: and the teams were
tied 28 - % at the half. Cen-
tral outscored the Vikings 11
&in_tlleihinL.quarter.;and 13
- 4 in the fourth quarter to
win 52 -38.
Toth Timmermans led
Sarnia with 17 points.
The GDCI Vikings played
A.N. Myer, the eventual
tournament winners, in a
pretournament exhibition
game Friday night, and
showed they rank right up
there with the best of them
by forcing the Niagara Falls
team ta'come up with a game
winning basket on a. set play
with four seconds remaining
in the game to win 42 - 40.
The Vikings held a 23 - 19
lead at halftime, but Niagara
Falls outscored Goderich 21-
11 in the fourth quarter to set
up their dramatic victory.
Ben Melick led 14 points
for Goderich. his Pitre had
six while Dave More, Andy
Telford and Jeff Denornme
had five apiece.
The Goderich Bedford
Flyers finally came out
ahead of the r Zurich
Buckeyes in Intermediate D
hockey action, beating them
9-8 on Zurich's ice on Friday.
Larry Gaynor was high
scorer for the Flyers with
three goals.
Goderich went ahead 3-2 in
the first period after Zurich
scored the first goal of the
game at 9:25. Len Kolkman
followed two minutes later
with a successful shot, and at
18:09, Phil Paquette netted
one to put the Flyers ahead.
Zurich tied it up just 35
seconds later, only to 'have
the Flyers' Bill Lewis score
in the .last minute of the
period:... _•
At the pne minute mark of
the second, Gaynor got his
first goal to put the locals
ahead 4-2. Dave Graf added
Goderich's fifthgoal at

14:32. •
The Flyers fell apart for
the rest of the second period
and allowed four opposition
shots to cross Percy
Bedard's goal line. The score
at the end of the second was
6'5 for the Buckeyes.
Two Goderich goals within
25 seconds of each other by
Lewis and Gaynor put the -
Flyers back in front 7-6 in the
-third period. However, the
Buckeyes turned things
around. once more- with two

Power play 'opportunities
suddenly arose for the
Flyers and they took ad-
vantage of them. Gaynor
complete his hat trick at
15:58 while a Buckeye was
off for -slashing.' With 47
seconds remaining, Zurich
drew another penalty.
Goderich pulled their
goalie to gain another man
advantage and with five
seconds left, Ron Corriveau
shovelled in the winner for
the Flyers.
The Flyers hosted Parkhill
on Monday night, but fell to
_ _defeat-by..a. snore of 10,3.
Goderich scored one goal
in' each of the three periods;
while Parkhill netted two in
the first, and four in each of
the last two periods.

The Goderich Sailing,Club
-will be holding its annual
meeting on Tuesday,
January 20 at the Maitland
Country Club. The meeting
will begin at 7.30p.m

The GDCI junior Viking basketball squad had a busy few
days, playing Seaforth to a 50-25 win on Friday afternoon
and competing in the annual Blue and White Tournament

Sunset Goff Club broke
open a close game with three
unanswered third period
goals, carrying them to a 4-1
victory ove r Whetston
Jewellers in CHHL hocks
action Sunday night.
The win was Sunset's third
in a row and twelfth of the
season in 19 starts. Their 24
points puts them in second
place, one point ahead of
Holmesville who have 23
points in 17 games.
Rick Whetstone's power
play goal gave the Jewellers
the early lead before Wayne
Doak tied the score in the
second period. John Sturdy,
Ray Volland, and Leroy
Meriam were the Sunset
scorers in the third.
Elsewhere in the league,
first place O'Briens defeated
the t • timist Green Machine
5-1 and Hodges Mill won
their third in a row, 5-2, over
the Burger Bar Royals. Both
games were played Sunday
morning.
Last Wednesday, January..
7, Sunset bombed the Burger
Bar 10-1. On Thursday
Holmesville stretched their
undefeated streak to six as
they edged Whetstones 4-3.
