LINTON 482-5322 Parts courier to your door. ‘A4tiu A tug ' oat wit '1'u many shipping butts, nothing can quite match the charm of tugboats. Big or small, old or modern, work -worn or pristine, these little strips, havhe an appeal all their own. To this writer and some of his cronies, one of t'he finest. was the tut; Prescotont of the Windsor Detroit Barge Line. The past tense isn't really called for here because this old girl is still afloat. It's just that she is out of service now and up fur sale, and it's possible she'll be sold off, the lakes wider a new name. Some time ago, the Prescotont was slightly damaged by fire. In the mean- time, the barge line which ferried railroad cars across the Detroit River had focussed more on roll -ori roll -off trade,•a task for which the big Prescotont is not really needed, says owner Joe Carollo'. She and two barges are up for sale, with the asking price for Prescotont at $290,000. "She's really meant for open water towing," says Carollo. We now have 10 pieces of equipment, and 'since the Prescotont isn't exactly suited to our changing operation, we've decided to sell her." A couple of years ago, the tug spent a number of weeks at Sarnia, possibly hop- ing to pick up some towing business'from that strategic location. ,Since then, however, shipping business has declined, taking towing with it, except far the occa- sional lucky tug hauling old. retired vessels to the scrapyards. What's special about the .Prescotont? At 57 years of age, she's.old-fashioned. She's chipped and scarred and now char- red; But beneath it all, her classic tugboat lines are obvious. Her engraved • bronze bell, brass wheelh rise hardware ' and other traditional fittings are in place. Her 2,000 -horsepower these! can handle major jobs. Her word -panelled top -deck rail curves beautifully around her 1930s - style wheelhouse.' In short, she has character. - She was built and registered in Canada in 1930, and hauled railroad barges bet- ween Prescott, Ont., and Ogdensburg, N.Y., just across the•St. Lawrence River, for the Canadian Pacific Passenger and Transfer Company. This firm was jointly owned • by Canadian Pacific and New York Central railroads. The tug's gross registered tonnage is 302. She is a hefty 112 feet long, with 27 feet of beam and draws a maximum of 13.5 feet. • Windsor Detroit Barge I,ine acquired her in 1971 and put her to similar work with a four -man crew as motive power for railroad ferries on the three-mile run between the two cities, She occasionally would' be given more interesting towing tasks elsewhere on the waterfront. According to Carollo, the Prescotont can easily be made operable.. The fire "damaged her galley and crews' quarters but otherwise did not impair her ability to perform, ' • Somewhere out there is a tug man with • traditionalist blood in his veins who has- . been waiting for a fine old lady like the Prescotont. Let's hope they get together soon, and that she will remain on the Great Lakes. rts re 9 This locafio only!!! Any popular Canadian. Brand Recently I read an -advertisement in the Goderich Signal Star requesting volunteers to sit on a Performing Arts Committee. Intrigued, I contacted Bob Marshall at the Goderich Recreation - Office for more details. Marshall explained the desire was to - form a committee to bring into . Goderich well known entertainment. They have already made arrangements to have Murray Mcl;aughlin perform on October 18;1987. Bob is hoping that those individuals who are also in- terested in this endeavour,'would con- • sider volunteering for this committee. . He requires cominittee members who would like to participate with publicity, or ticket 'selling or would volunteer their organizational skills. He realizes that the summer months are busy for most people, so he is making it as easy r ViI, LJNTA SPEAKING ILY Shelley H rim-,,. -as possible for those involved. Ini he hopes td meet once a month an hen perhaps more frequently as the -per or • - 'nance date arrives. The first meeting- - will be planned for July. This is a great 'opportunity for those, like myself, who have complained about • the. lack of quality entertainnient seen locally. I volunteered my time, so, what about you? Bob Marshall could use our support. He cannot do this undertaking '. by himself. Get involved!'Call hire at 524-2125 at the Recreation Office.
