eKay CJ:'roristers win
oirfest in Kitchener
On Wednesday, June 3 the MacKay
CNristers travelled to Kitchener to par -
ti :ipate for the fourth time in the Senior
r.itizens' Choirfest. It was held this year in
,he Grand Ballroom n,f Bingeman Park
Lodge and was presented by the Kitchener
Parks and Recreation and the Cameron
Heights Senior Citizens Kiwanis Club.
The Parts Choir Competition took place
during the afternoon and eight choirs par-
ticipated, representing Mississauga,
Alliston, Oakville, St. Catharines, Niagara
Falls, Chatham, Kitchener and Goderich..
The MacKay Choristers were the final
choir to perform and were naturally anx-
ious after listening to the capabilities of
— the seven other choirs all afternoon.
However, the expertise, patience and
talent of the Choristers' director, Irla
Stewart and pianist Joan Henwood were
rewarded when the adjudicator announced
that the MacKay Choristers had captured
first place with a mark of 90. The Rockway
Gardens Glee ('lub u1 Kitchener took se-
cond place with a urar'k of 88 while The "J"
Singers of Niagara Falls and the Mello -
Aires Sr. Choir of Alliston were third and
fourth respectively with marks of 85 and
84.
Mr. Donald Landry, a retired Music Con-
sultant, was the adjudicator for the day
and he had apt criticism as well as some
very kind things to say about the Goderich
choir. As so often stated by the Choristers'
own director, he felt the choir should work
on its vowel sounds and syncopated
rhythms. On the other hand, he found the
sensitivity with which the Choristers
treated the sung •' Ye Batiks and Braes"
impressive and called them a "nice
together group" with "gond phrase
building hecriusc of a well established soft
tone quality to build upon."
In its four appearances at the Choirfest
this choir has received a third, a second
and two firsts.
Playhouse to open with
Babes In Arms June 30
GRAND BEND - There's plenty of music
and bustle at the Huron Country Playhouse
as the first.week of rehearsals get underway
for the Season' Opener Babes In Arms.
About 18 outstanding Canadian per-
formers have gathered at the Playhouse to
produce Rodgers' and Hart's comedy
musical. Artistic Director, Steven Schipper
says, "The work of any theatre company is
always a reflection of the people. who col-
laborate in its creation, and we are blessed
at the Playhouse to have so many of the
Country's finest talents working. here.
What's particularly exciting about this sum-
mer- are .all the young budding stars taking
part in Babes In• Arms. Their energy per-
vades the Playhouse." Among these,
Theresa Stewart, Annie returns in an entire-
ly different role. Audiences will enjoy the
terrific talent that these young people'"will
provide.
In addition, music and dance rehearsals
are starting to take shape. Musical Direc-
tcir, Michael Mulrooney says, "The, entire,
team at the Playhbuse is capable of produc-
ing brilliant, breathtaking theatre. I'm sure
our audience will be thrilled when they see
Babes In Arms.
., Behind the scenes crew are busy building
sets, making costumes and gathering props,
Making for lots of excitement at tl e
Playhouse.
Babes In Arms previews June :30th -with
the opening night set for .July 1 and runs
through until ,Iuly 18 on Main Stage.
Based on the book, by George Op-
penheimer, Rodgers and Hart 'manage to
combine great music• and songs along with a
high e.nergy, hi -jinx variety of
entertainment.
With the rising cost. of production, very
• few theatres endeavour to produce large
scale musicals - however, the Huron Coun-
try Playhouse has managed to. present high
quality' theatre without cutting .back on
entertainment.

pressure.
"The teachers there were brilliant — .ex-
cellent. The school is designedfor real
development of your person, including an in-
troduction into 'theatre and the• craft of ac-
ting," he' said. Despite the quality of the
education however "even they don't
guarantee you a job.';• said Bundy, noting
that the school might set up graduates for a
few auditions, but after that they are on
their own.
VARIETY, VARIETY, VARIETY
While Bundy managed to find work in
Blyth this summer, thanks to his previously -
established contacts there, • he knows how
few actors can count on working steadily in
the business.
"I kind of like the transient quality," of
the business., he said. "I can't stand being
stuck in jobs — regular jobs."
'•I know in this field I'm going to be work-
ing with different people all the time — it's
variety, variety, variety."' •
However, the lack of security can be
unsettling at times, he admits, adding that
doesn't yet have anything lined up for this
fall
"It takes a while to get to know the people
in the business," he says, pointing out that
most casting opportunities become known
through personal contacts and word •of
mouth, making it important to remain in
touch with the inside theatre community.
FAMHX SUPPORTIVE
Acting has a reputation a's an unsteady
career at hest, so now that Bundy is work-
ing, he really appreciates the support of his
family in helping him attain his goals..While,
he says his parents were, "tenative at the
beginning." they never backed down in their
support and helped out financially while he
attended school.
He has an older brother, a younger sister,
and a theory that his placement in the fami-
ly order might have something to do with his
ending up on the boards. ,
"People say a lot of middle children go in-
to acting, because they have to entertain
themselves."
Right now though', he's busy entertaining
others in his role as .Jimmy in "Bodertown
Cafe," which opens .June 23 at the Blyth
Festival.
