Slow itch donates $1,0
Goderich Men's Slow Pitch issued minor
baseball a $1,000 cheque, issued a
challenge to other organizations
and took issue with the lack of s port for
ntin is ball in Goderich.
Slow Pitch donated the $1,000 to help the
ftnattcthIly troubled travelling teams
raver bus expenses. Some of the money
will also gu towards the purchase of balls
and equipment.
Squirt, pee wee, and bantam aged
players try -out for the travelling teams. If
they snake the teas) their $15 registration
fie is returned to help cover costs.
According to Ron Klages, president of
minor ball, coaches get $200 each to' cover
team expenses. However, the money is not
'el tough .
John Phillips, squirt coach, says his
team plays as far away as Walkerton.
Each player is required to pay $10 per trip
for the bus.
The problem, said Klages is the Mearns
don't have sponsors. Most corporate spon-
sors back a team in one of the adult

support shown by his league.
Itis really in the best interest of these
leagues to support minor ball, said Bruce
Baker of men's slow pitch, most of the
minor ball players will end up on•an adult
league' eventually.
Frawley also felt the Town of Goderich
was not doing enough for minor ball.
Klages however, feels the Town and the
Recreation Board specifically, are more
than helpful. The town • .provides. the
diamonds for free as well as the use,.of.any
facilities we need, said Klages.
Last year minor ball paid their own way.

development to minor ball. The league
` plans, to hold a draw to recoup the.money.
The. need for sponsors and additional
funding will,become even.more.vital next
year when the league plans to add a
midget team for players 17-18 years of age.
Presently players in that age group have
nowhere to play." Players who are good
enough can play for the junior team in the
• fastball league but the rest are left out,
said K1ageg. Player must be over 18 to
play men's slow pitch.
The squirttravelling team is sponsored
by Suncoast Ford and Hayter's Chev-Olds
and is 'the only team with a corporate
sponsor.

wins this week. They pelted the BBs 16-5,,

The key to their success has to be
defence. Allowing just 18 runs in 7 games,
thtty top the league in that category. This is
aided by a potent offence. A good mixture
of base hitters and fence busters has pro-
duced 88 runs.

At th eneral league meeting on June 1,
the G SI, officially recognized the finan-
cial strain that minor ball is experiencing
and threw our" support to the tune of,
$1000 - their way. I, personally, am very
proud of the GMSI, for this action. The two
new diamonds are in the works and work
parties will be arra.ngecl soon. After
numerous fines, the eligibility lists are all
in and complete. We have 463 signed
players including 31 two league players -
though I know of a few who have not been
declared on the lists. Team reps should
double check. Oh -- by the way, only 462
men. are in Our league: Use your calculator
to .check my subtraction but. I believe there
is one left over! Yes sir - it's a woman -
Now what the hell do we do?
