As the headline indicates, Ed.Mannering
... the Bear ... is on a real tear with his, bat.
Ed has played in the GMSL•f.,or many years
noW and • has always been held in high
regard by the • opposition. 'Combining
respectable defensive skills With a power-
ful bat, he has been a. major force on. the
Ideal Supply team andthe dynasty 'they
seem to have created in the past 6 02' 7
years. •
In'the five league games to date, Ed has
a whopping.833 on base percentage and an
incredible 2444 slugging percentage. In-
cluded in this "Bear Tear" are 8 _straight
home runs which has to be some sort' of
record. The whole league joins me in con-
gratulating .you on the great start. You
snake us a better League Ed. • -
Had it been any other week, the team of.
Sunys would have captured'the headlines.
This .has to be the surprise team' of the
year. Last year they started withan 0 and
8 record- blit rebounded to capture the' C
divisionchampionship. This year, they are
6 and 0 and alone in first place.
Asked • what has turned this team
'around, team rep Pete Lovell attributed it
to their bats. Everyone is hitting base hits
and that produces runs - in fact, 115 runs,
and! that will 'win many Slowpitch

games, ,
A great start Sunys. Keep it up!
The GMSL has changed a lot since last
year: This years play is, a good argument
in itself for retaining our round robin for-
mat vesus the often discussed divisional
structure based on previous years stan-
dings..• With a divisional structure we
would not have seen Local 1863 defeat the
Bulldogs or Murphys -Law ( the old Garb &
Gear team) hammer the Parkhouse.
The round robin has made this League•
what.it if today - a, highly competitive
League of close t 500' men.
' It could' be said., that any team that •
stands still in the winter, goes backward in
the summer. Though they have only 3
points in 5 games, the Sifto_I.ocal .16 team
is playing excellent ball.. -
So is Local,1863 and Murphy's Late. No
one in this ,League has two points before
the game is played.
The Bears Tear & Sunys had to get the
spotlight this week. As such there. was not
room to list the 29 game scores. But tune in
next week because we hay.e 31'niore games
scheduled. , •

ble to play for the Oldtimers. However the. Teams will play under FIFA rules and
the referees are Ontario Soccer Associa-
tion.sanctigned officials. • .
Clarence Knight and Alexander will
coach the team and Evert Middel is the
team's president.
Fritz Basler, a soccer player .from Kit-
chener, founded the Oldtimers seven years
,ago.
Goderich plays its first game at 9:00
a.m. at Agricultural Park against
Stratford.
• The Goderich Oldtimers- Soccer Team
must be good sports, because more often
than not someone else wins their trophy.
According to Vic Alexander, team cap-
tain, the Oldtimers are usually the runner-
ups at their annual tournament. It does
not look too good to win your own touna-
ment. We stress sportsmanship, said
Alexander
Seven teams from Oshawa,@ Windsor,
Guelph, Stratford, Port Elgin and Saugeen
will, on June 6, try to once, again make
