contribution t it
Bell Canada's tax contribution locally as
a result of telecommunications operations
in 1986 totalled $140,000.
Last year Bell spent $636,000 in this area
to maintain and upgrade telephone ser-
vice. The. 1987 cost, is expected to be
$1,260,000. `
Bell employs 83 people in the Stratford
area, with an annual payroll of $2.6
million. There were 4,647 customers in the
Goderich exchange at the end of 1986..
In 1986 Bell paid $140,545.56 in taxes to
Goderich as follows: real estate, $2,951.32;
business, $883.94 and gross receipts,
$136,710,30 or $28.51 per phone.
In 1987, gross receipts tax will total
$149,115.40.
The gross receipts tax is a levy of five
per cent of all telecommunications
revenue derived from Bell operations in
Ontario the previous year and apportioned
to each exchange based on the number of
Bell owned telephones in use in the
exchange.
Company -wide, Bell's capital ' expen-
ditures this year will likely total $1.787
billion, with Ontario's share more than $1
billion.
Some highlights of Bell's local spending
s $140, 00
rn 1986: rural facility reinforcement 5 of
Goderich; additional telephone line
capacity in switching centre; transmission
equipment.
Some highlights of Bell's 1987 local
plans: urban modernization, North St.
from Town Square to Gloucester, replac-
ing aerial with buried cable; digital
transmission equipment and trunk rein-
forcement; facility reinforcement north
and east of town; facilities for Meneset
trailer park and airport; feeder able
relief for new subdivision, Suncoast and
Eldon.

Dr, Charles Chan discussed "Nuclear
Free Zones," He said in 1978, the United
Nations General Assembly endorsed the
concept of nuclear free zones, explaining
that different parts of the world declared
areas "nuclear free." '
"If all areas enforced this, it would be an
effective way to stop the problem of
nuclear war," he said.
In April 1987, 156 communities were
declared nuclear free including in the pro -

extermination.
With regard to the present Act, many of
the speakers had experienced problems, for
example, unrealistic criteria limiting fun-
ding, inadequate procedures relative to de -
designation, lack of definition and guidance
from the Ministry relative to interpretation,
vinces of Manitoba, Vancouver, Toronto
and Montreal. Vancouver city council
plays an active role in opposing nuclear
war and Dr. Chan referred to Vancouver
as "the peace capital of North America."
"Nuclear war threatens human ex-
istence;" he said. "We have to do
something and we have to start now." ,
Reverend Robert Ball spoke about.
"Peace in the Shalom of God," and stress-
ed many important points that are encom- .
passed in the word "Shalom."
Rev. Ball translated Shalom into mean-
ing ''wholeness" which includes har-
monious relationships between persons,
personal well-being, good health, safety or
secure in general terms, dying in peace,
but not prematurely, and a successful
outcome.
"Jesus asks us to be peace makers," he
said. "'To be sons of God and share. the
divine work of peace making."—
'
naking. "' Rev. Ball concluded by saying we are
created for Shalom as a gift for ourselves
and our vocation is to, be responsible peace
makers.

poor conununication and lack of continuity
which frustrated LAeACs in their
endeavours to fulfil their role. ,
Other matters of concern covered
Museums, their special place in the scheme
of things, their ongoing development as
keepers of the past for the future and
storage facilities for the artefacts for which
no provision was s.nade. Maintenance of ar-
chival material., its storage and availability
