With country music breaking the air, and
the sound of the caller's voice in time with
the music, the members or the Huron -Bruce
Swingers Square Dancing Club swing into
action for • their weekly Thursday night
session.
The calls of "Doe-si-doe" and -left and
right stars" are a language all its own., ut
to the square dancers, it's 11 Inverted into
fluid movement on the dance floor. •
To the observer, the square dancers ap-
pear like a'page out of rural folklore, with
the ladies in tr-aditi(na•1 skirts or dresses
which flare and swirl while dancing to the
music. The gentlemen are also finely at-
tired in their outfits, complete with a coun-
try string tie.
And, says square dance caller Lorne
Lockrey of Port Elgin, once you get used to
the unique language and movements of
.sqaure dancing. it quickly becomes a source
of pure enjoyment. •
••It never ceases to be' fun. eve)) when you •
goof up," says Lockrey, who along with his
wife Cecile, do all the calls for the.Huron-.
Bruce Swingers. "It's like bridge ; there's
no/two hand's the same:"
)For the past 18 years, many area people
have been enjoying square dancing. Accor-
ding to Murray McGill of Goderich, the cur-
, rent president of the 42 -member club, the
club started in 1969 after four of five couples
who haci been driving to Hanover to square
dance decided to start a club in this area.
The club started in Lucknow at the public
school and has since switched to Brookside
school where it has grew to its present size.
"It just grew from there. Certainly there
has been some turnover with some of. the
members moving away. But, there has.
been lots of new interest and young anti old
can do it," McGill said.
' He said the members come from all over
Huron and Hruce Counties with most of the
42 members situated in West Wawanosh and
Ashfield Townships, with some members
from Goderich .and also from 'Huron
Township. in Hruce County. ,
STILL POPULAR
Why is square dancing still as popular toC.
day as it was in the 1800's? McGill explains
it's a form `of recreation couples can do
together, and it offers good exercise. But,
mainly, it's just plain fun.
It's fun, it's good exercisle•and it's also a
great social activity. You meet all kinds of
people. You're so busy having a good time,
you forget all 'your problems," says Lois
' McGill, also a member of the club.
With the large number of calls which can
be, incorporated into a sqaure dance,... 69
basic calls to be exact, you would think it
would be difficult to learn the art of square
dancing? Not so, says I,ockrey.
"If you can walk, you can square dance,"
he' claims. "All you have to learn is how to
move left or• right. Some people say they
can't square dance because they have ,two
'left feet.. In tact, they're the easiest ones to
teach."
Square dancing is something you "learn
by doings;, Lockrey 'says. To start, the.
caller will work with two to three basic
sqaure dancing calls and continue' to build
from' there.
"It may only take about 40 nights ofdanc-
ing before you can learn the 69 basics. • The
average couple will start dancing in about 20
minutes. It starts basic and progresses
from there.
"They, feel a sense of accomplishment
once they learn they can sqaure dance. It's
the fear of the, unknown which keeps people
from square dancing," he said. '
While square dancing has a long history, it
has changed over the years, says I,ockrey.
In the past, one couple in the square would
do one pattern while the other three, couples
would do the same move and there was also
a limited number Of calls. In the modern
version, of square dancing, there is far less
repetition with all four couples doing a dif-
ferent pattern that the rest of the couples in
the square.
However, Lockrey says there is.a certain
stigma attached to square dancing.
"It's not jumping around to fiddle tunes."
In fact, many of the top country and
western songs and pop songs now can be
adapted for use in square dancing.
"We've got to get away from that image.
If I had known what square dancing was
reafK all about, I would have started 20

The Huron-Hruce Swingers also !have an
hour of "Round Dancing":,before the start of

dance as partners. The couples are cued as
to movement as they'move in the circle.
Lockrey noted that square dancing
