Love Ashleigh A ieulturalist program begins This year marks the 16th anniversary of the Junior Agriculturalist Program. The program has grown. to a province -wide shrnrner experience•opportunity for urban students since 1972. Approximately 2700 young people have experienced this unique opportunity across the province of Ontario. • The Junior Agriculturalist Program is an experience program in which urban youths ranging in age from 16-18, with no previous farming experience, work nn a host fancily farm during the st.rnmer. The students experience rural life and are en- couraged to participate in community pro- grams with their host family. The Junior Agriculturalists work for twelve days and receive two days off. Host families must run a full time com- mercial operation, and have an interest in supervising and working with inexperienc- ed youth to help them develop the skills needed •.on, a• farm. The Junior Agriculturalist receives a . wage of $20 a day for their" services. In addition to the room and board, the host family supplies ten dollars of the . total twenty dollars wage. The remaining ten dollars is sup- plied by the. Ministry of Agriculture and Food. This year, there is still a need for Junior Agriculturalists and host families in Huron County. About 80,000 trees were planted in, April, nearly twice the number planted in 1986. Under the Reforestation Assistance Pro- gram trees were planted on 36 privately owned sites as well as 1V1VCA properties. The trees planted will help control soil ero- sion, conserve water and improve wildlife habitat. Farm windbreaks plantings made up about 30 per cent of the trees planted this spring. The MVCA's reforestation program is. growing in popularity. Dave Grummett, Director of Operations for the Authority, ad- vises landowners wanting to plant trees to plan well in advance. "The 1988 tree planting program is already booked with about 100,000 trees to be planted" said Mr. Grummett. 'Applica- tions are now being accepted for the spring 1989 program". The MVCA Reforestation Assistance Pro- gram is available to landowners with bet- ween one and 10 acres of land needing plan- ting, Authority staff visit each applicant's site to assess which species of tree is most suitable and the number of trees needed. The major species planted are white pine, white spruce, white cedar and Norway spruce.
