Eileen Palmer Mayor of Goderich adill takes The. G.D.C.I. Viking Track and Field Team narrowly missed defending their Huron -Perth Championship to F.E. Madill S.S. of Wingham last Tuesday and Wednesday. The Vikings have held the title for the past three years and lost the Champion- ship this year by 63 points with Goderich totalling 522 team points to Madill's 585. The overall girls title was recaptured this year by Goderich by a mere 15 points. For the second year in a row the Senior Boys team won the Senior Boys Huron - Perth Championship for out -distancing all the competition. The Junior Girls Huron -Perth Cham- pionship was also won by Goderich. In the past the Vikings have been led by certain individuals that have displayed athletic excellence not only on the field but off. This year has been no exception. One such leader is veteran sprinter Joanne Campbell. Campbell led the girls to their Overall Championship with five firsts. She won the Senior 100 metres 13.4 ), 200 meters (26.91 and the 400 meters 1:04.6). She also anchored the winning Senior girls 4 x 100 meter relay team and was on the first place Open Girls 4 x 400 relay team. Joanne was the Senior Girls • Individual Champion,. The Senior Boys Individual Champion was Baird Robinson. Robinson's athletic performance has improved dramatically in the past year. He led the Senior Boys to their Huron -Perth Team Championship by winning the 200 meter sprint with a time of 23.7, Robinson tied the record in this event. He also won the 400 meter hurdles (1:02.26 ), placed second in the 400 meter ( 52.2 ),' anchored the winning Open Boys 4 x 400 relay team and anchored the Senior Boys 4 x 100 relay team which placed third. The Junior Girls won the Huron -Perth Team Championship and showed remarkable depth with sprinter Erin Robinson leading the way with the .only first place finish for the Junior Girls in the 100 meter sprint (13.1). Their 99 points were earned by second to sixth .place finishes. Robinson added a second in the 200 meters (26.9) and a third in the 400 meters (1:03.3). . Senior thrower Ray Bedard won the Shot Put (14.502 m) and the Discus (38.44 m) an placed fifth in the Javelin (39.72 m). Sauna Landenpera, an exchange student from Finland, surprised everyone with her come -from -behind win in the Javelin (31.36 • m), and, her first place finish in the 800 • meters (2:37.8). Sanna proved she is a very .versati1e.th1ete when She anchored ' the winning Open Girls 4 x 400 relay team • and helping the Senior Girls. 4.x 100 team to win their event. She also placed fourth in the Shot Put (8.71). ' Junior Bob Pellow won the 400 meter (54.9), placed third in the High Jump (1.71 . meter) and placed fourth in the Long Jump (5.18). Senior Ken Logtenburg made a fantastic toss of 46.96 meters to take first place in the Javelin. He also placed third in the Pole Vault (2.9 meter). • Other first place finishes were recorded y Midget Sprinter Bryan Corriveau in the 400 meter (55.4) and Midget Julie Pentland in the 400 meter (1:05.5). The Senior Girls 4 'x 100 relay team of Leslie Meyers, Erin Robinson, Sauna Landenpera, and Joanne Campbell won in a time of 53.4. The Junior Boys 4 x 100 relay team of Rob Dunne, Bob Pellote, Darryl Boloski and Jeff Boyce won in a time of 47.5. The Open Boys 4 R 400 relay team of Bob Pellow, Bryan Corriveau, Shane Worsell and Baird Robinson won with a time of 3:41.4. The Open Girls 4 x 400 relay team of Maureen Stapleton, Erin Robinson, GDCI Senior sprinter Joanne Campbell coasts to victory in the 100 metre sprints at the Huron -Perth track and field championships held in Goderich Wed. and Thurs. Campbell led the senior girls to the overall championship with five first. She won the 100 sprints. 200 metres, 400 metres,' she anchored the winning 4x100 relay and ran in the winning 4x400 relay. Other athletes placing were as follows: In Midget girls: Leslie Meyers - 2nd (100), 2nd (200); Joy Mabon - 3rd (3000), 4th (800), 4th (1500); Rhonda, .Hogan - 3rd (800), 5th (3000); Nadja Davidson - 3rd (high jump); Kelli Wade -.5th (discus);, Paula Vandenburg -5th (80 meters H). The midget girls 4-x 100 relay team of Paul Vandenburg, Julie Pentland, Jayne Far- rish and Laurie Bender placed fourth. Sherri Talbot anchored the 4 x 100 relay team but was injured in the heat so she could not run the finals. In Midget Boys: Bryan Corriveau - 2nd (200), 3rd (100) ; Shawn Talbot - 2nd (800), 4th (high jump), 5th (400); Jeremy Denomy.'- 2nd (1.500),'3rd (3000); Braden Dent - 4th (100 meter H), 6th (long jump) Jeff Nesbitt - 3rd (pole vault). The Midget Boys 4 x 100relay team of Shawn Talbot, Bryan Corriveau, Jeremy Denomy and Pheng Troeung placed fourth. In Junior Girls: Deb O'Brien - 4th (100), Maureen Stapleton - 2nd (800), 4th (1500), 3rd (3000) ; Jenny Cunningham - 2nd (1500), 2nd (3000), 3rd (800); Chris Connel- ly - 3rd (80 meter H) ; Stephanie Durnin - 4th (shot) ; Jenny Allen - 6th (Shot) , 6th (discus), 6th (javelin); Natalie Le Brun - -5th (discus).; Tanya Jeffrey -4th (javelin); Krista Collinson - 4th (400 meter H) . The Junior Girls 4 x 1100 relay team of Krista Collinson,. Maureen Stapleton, Heather Bogie and Deb O'Brien placed second.
