The agency began with three nurses and has since grown to its present staff. Knight explained the agency nurses are on call seven days per week, 24 hours per day with the help of a beeper system. The patients also become familiar with .the nursing staff since each patient is treated by a team of nurses, which benefits both patient and nurse. 'It's a very exciting type of nursing. More and more people can be cared for at home. Hopefully we are preventing people from ending up in a nursing home or hospital," Knight said. The aim of the Huron County Home Care Program, a provincial government, pro- gram administered by the Huron County Health Unit, is to -keep peoplr out of hospitals, to get them home from hospitals sooner and to allow them to stay in their own homes while receiving care," accor- ding to Linda Reid, a Home Care co- ordinator. Reid, a registered nurse, has been work- ing with the Clinton based program for the past three and one-half years. Prior to this, she worked in a hospital setting. "I've always been interested in the com- munity. I enjoyed hospital nursing but I enjoy the comtnunity too and Home Care lets me broaden my horizons," she said. The Home Care Program, Reid noted, is a kind of replacement for they igh cost of hospital stays. , "Hospital stays are so costly. It is so much more practical to keep the patient in their • own home, plus they get better quicker in their own environment." The Home Care Program does not pro- vide direct nursing, rather it is more and rs s C h s re One of the duties of registered nursing assistants at the local hospital is to keep patient charts up to date. "We don'$ provide direct nursing. We're more co-ordinator, providing ,assessment and management while the patient is on the program,." Reid said.
