GLT's play THEATRE REVIEW BY PATRICK RAFTIS i-,aughs and light entertainment are the elements an audience most expects to derive from a performance of a Neil Simon play. In that regard, the Goderich Little Theatre production of "Last of the Red Hot Lovers," at The Livery last week, was all you could ask for. The play centres on terminally -married restaurant owner Barney Cashman ( played by Glenn Creamer) and his at- tempts to spice up his life with an extra- marital affair. Cashman's inexperience at adultry is .painfully obvious in everything from his choice of a love nest (his mother's apart- ment) , to his choice of women (three wildly divergent and completely unseducable temales I. Creamer gives a strong performance as the hapless Cashman, who sees all three rendezvous go down the drain for a variety of reasons. Although often a straight man for the antics of his would-. be mistresses, the role requires Creamer in only his second GLT appearance) to be on-stage for the duration and run the gamut of emotional reactions: nervous anticipation, impatient sarcasm and, evefntually, outright rage. Through it all displays an ad- mirable sense of Vomic tinning. Overall he gives -an enjoyable interpreta- tion of the role. , Kathleen Hamilton, as' Cashman's first attempted fling, Elaine Navazio, is outstanding as a world -wise women who has little patience for Barney's ill -at -ease attempts at intimate conversation. Elaine -wants to get right down to monkey business, a prospect which Cashman finds hard on his illusions. • Hamilton's character is blessed with some Of the play's best lines and she makes the most of the opportunities af- forded her to garner some earnest laughs . from the audience: Enter Margaret Hill, as dizzily derang: ed aspiring actress Bobbie Michelle, lured to Cashman's hideaway unknowing ' of his amc-ous intentions: The interplay between Hill and Creamer is fast -paced , and funny, culminating in a hilarious scene with the two of there smoking marijauna and lazily trading reminicences. Despite Bobbie's naivete, Cashman strikes out again. But, he's learning. Cashman character is a much transformed one by the third act. As he prepares to conquer Jeannette, his best friend's wife and his wife's best friend, he appears calm, cool and collected - a veteran of the trenches of love. . The movements are well blocked and the lines nicely -timed. A few botched lines.early on, Wedneday night, can undoubtably•be attributed to opening . night jitters and were, rapidly smoothed over. The nervousness disappeared mid.- way idway into the first act .• The set design for this production was also McEwan's responsibility and the at- tention to detail is 'Clearly evident. While Barney Cashman never does "get lucky" during the course of this play, anyone .who went to see. it certainly lucked into plenty of laughs and an enter- taining evening. . up playing head games, instead of bed games, much to Barney's ever -deepening chagrin. , The Goderich Signal -Star 'will be CLOSED VICTORIA DAY MONDAY, MAY 18th C ;b • ALL ADVERTISING & NEWS COPY SHOULD E IN OUR OFFICE FRIDAY MAY 15th LATE NEWS COPY WILL BE ACCEPTED TOES®® MAY 19th UNTIL 10 A.M.
