The Goderich Laketown Band will be
making its tenth appearance at the Sound of
Goderich '87 on May 13th at -8:00 p.rn. in the
Knox Presbyterian auditorium. Of the three
groups participating, the Harbouraires, the
MacKay Choristers and the Laketown Band,
the band is the only organization that has
performed each of the ten years the con-
certs have been in existence.
This ear the band will be under the direc-
tion of its new conductor, Bruce Cookson,
who, with his wife Kathryn and two-year-old
son William, resides at RR 2, Clinton. Bruce
took over the leadership of band in mid-
January and has worked with patience and
diligence to prepare the music for this con-
cert and for the Walkerton. Rotary Music
Festival, in which the band competed on
Tuesday, April 28th. The Goderich
Laketown Band was well received and was
given a mark of 84 for its efforts.
The twenty-nine year old Bruce Cookson.
is a native cif London, Ontario and is a
graduate of Sir Frederick Banting Secon-
dary School. He received both is B. Ed.
degree and his B. Mus. A. degree from the
University of Western Ontario. Presently,
he is teaching vocal•and instrumental music
as well as general subjects at the
Holmesville Public School. He recently
recorded some of his own compositions for
the Circle City Recording Company. The
band members feel fortunate to have Bruce
as their present director. •
The Goderich Laketown Band was found-
ed during. Canada's Centennial 11967 I by Dr.
Jim Peters and Charles Kalbfleisch. The
.latter became the organization's' first band
master. Today, four charter members re-
main, Jim Peters, George Griffiths, Shirley
McMillan and Don McMillan. Thus, to
celebrate its twentieth anniversary in 1987,
the band is planning a special reunion con -

cert on Sunday evening July 26th as part of
this summer's Harbour Park' Concert
series. It is hoped that many of the band's
former conductors and members will accept
the invitation to attend this reunion.
The Laketown Band personnel would like
to encourage the residents of Goderich and
the" surrounding area to support our local.

Goderich '87: As a grande finale to the even-
ing the Harbouraires, the MacKay
'Choristers and the Laketown Band will com-

Pay attention to grownups
A ,letter to a granddaughter:
My dear young lady; • •
• Before you grow right out of my life I'd
like to talk to you about GROWNUPS.. Do
pay attention to them, they know your

. you think and, hope before you grow any
older, that you will talk' to them about your
problems, indecisions, questions and about
the goings-on and changes of a crazy

UCW must meet needs of
younger women speaker claims,
Members must find .ways to meet the
needs and aspirations of younger church
women if , the UCW , organization is to
celebrate a 50th anniversary, according to
speaker Bev Robinson, student minister of
Exeter United Church.
She provoked laughter withher reminders
of 'We've never done it that way before",'Uf
they don't like us, they don't have to join
us," and "We've always done it this way,
and I know that won't work." ,
Her challenge echoed the Anniversary
theme of Called to Respond in Such a Time
as This, and was discussed by groups. Sug-
gestions and comments were later
exctaartgeo.
As 300 women, from the Huron -Perth
Presbyterial gathered in Kirkton Corhmuni-
ty .Centre on April 29, they celebrated'the
first 25 years of work, worship and
fellowship.. Past -presidents were honored
and presented with corsages. The hall was
decorated with colourful banners and a
specially designed anniversary quilt con'-
taining names of all the churches in London
Conference.'
A women's .quartette form the Seaforth
area, Horizon, was much enjoyed. They not
only harmonized musically but wore outfits
in the UCW colours of green and navy blue.
Local women provided refreshments during
an intermission, and Mrs. Lloy Grose of Mit-
chell and Marilyn Kreuter of Rostock led
sing -songs in their own inimitable style:
A moving worship service, presented by
women from Parkview United Church,
Stratford, brought the evening to a close.
