Of the three groups participating, the Harbouraires, the MacKay Choristers and the Laketown Band, the band is the only organization that has performed each of the ten years the con- certs have been in existence. This ear the band will be under the direc- tion of its new conductor, Bruce Cookson, who, with his wife Kathryn and two-year-old son William, resides at RR 2, Clinton. Bruce took over the leadership of band in mid- January and has worked with patience and diligence to prepare the music for this con- cert and for the Walkerton. Rotary Music Festival, in which the band competed on Tuesday, April 28th. The Goderich Laketown Band was well received and was given a mark of 84 for its efforts. The twenty-nine year old Bruce Cookson. is a native cif London, Ontario and is a graduate of Sir Frederick Banting Secon- dary School. He received both is B. Ed. degree and his B. Mus. A. degree from the University of Western Ontario. Presently, he is teaching vocal•and instrumental music as well as general subjects at the Holmesville Public School. He recently recorded some of his own compositions for the Circle City Recording Company. The band members feel fortunate to have Bruce as their present director. • The Goderich Laketown Band was found- ed during. Canada's Centennial 11967 I by Dr. Jim Peters and Charles Kalbfleisch. The .latter became the organization's' first band master. Today, four charter members re- main, Jim Peters, George Griffiths, Shirley McMillan and Don McMillan. Thus, to celebrate its twentieth anniversary in 1987, the band is planning a special reunion con - Bruce Cookson cert on Sunday evening July 26th as part of this summer's Harbour Park' Concert series. It is hoped that many of the band's former conductors and members will accept the invitation to attend this reunion. The Laketown Band personnel would like to encourage the residents of Goderich and the" surrounding area to support our local. musicians as they present the Sound of Goderich '87: As a grande finale to the even- ing the Harbouraires, the MacKay 'Choristers and the Laketown Band will com- bine to. perform the majestic composition "One World". The challenging words of this song were written by John W. She provoked laughter withher reminders of 'We've never done it that way before",'Uf they don't like us, they don't have to join us," and "We've always done it this way, and I know that won't work." , Her challenge echoed the Anniversary theme of Called to Respond in Such a Time as This, and was discussed by groups. Sug- gestions and comments were later exctaartgeo. As 300 women, from the Huron -Perth Presbyterial gathered in Kirkton Corhmuni- ty .Centre on April 29, they celebrated'the first 25 years of work, worship and fellowship.. Past -presidents were honored and presented with corsages. The hall was decorated with colourful banners and a specially designed anniversary quilt con'- taining names of all the churches in London Conference.' A women's .quartette form the Seaforth area, Horizon, was much enjoyed. They not only harmonized musically but wore outfits in the UCW colours of green and navy blue. Local women provided refreshments during an intermission, and Mrs. Lloy Grose of Mit- chell and Marilyn Kreuter of Rostock led sing -songs in their own inimitable style: A moving worship service, presented by women from Parkview United Church, Stratford, brought the evening to a close.
