Quernent sets tone in Throne speech

Th one, the,OntarioGovernment has seta
bold new agenda to ensure that our province
tali yes its place as a world class society in the
21st century.
With the leadership of Premier David
Peterson, the Ontario Government will con-
tinue to provide an environment in which all
Ontarians may reach, their full potential.
The new' agenda builds on commitments
made in last year's Throne Speech, -.restor-
ing
restor-
ing excellence to, the education' system,
dealing with the social and .economicim-
plications of changing demographics, and
meeting' the challenges of an increasingly
competitive international environment.
Ontario is currently enfoying a period of
sustaining economicgrowth. During the last
two years, 309,000 new jobs have been
' created • in- the province and the unemploy-
ment rate has .fallen to 6.9 percent, the
lowest in Canada..
The current economic buoyancy. has
allowed the Government of Ontario to ad-
dress many of the, chronic underfundings
probler,rs that have diminished the
capacities cif our public institutions.
The goal a, the government is to revitalize
our institutions and programs to serve the,
people of Ontario, make them more accessi-
ble to everyone in all parts of the province
and equip them to meet the challenges of an
increasingly'technologicat world.
The Ontario Government is, also commit-
ted to strengthening the province's capacity
to compete in the international marketplace
by involving the people of the province in all
the decisions -that affect their economic and

The Ontario; Government will extend the.
hand of opportunity and social justice to all
Ontarians and assist those who are unable to
grasp it on their now.
Programs and services will be made
available on a decentralized basis; close at
hand and easy to find. They will respect the
dignity, independence and unique needs of
each individual as well as Ontario's cultural
and regional diversity.
This -new agenda for the Ontario Govern-
ment will give priority to ale following
areas:
- Ontario's competitive position to preserve
. and create jobs
- full and equal economic opportunities for
women
- more affordablehousing
- • independent living opportunities for
,seniors and the disabled
. - environmental protection
- health and safety protection for workers
- prevention of illness and adoption of
healthyliving habits while enhancing
