The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has renewed its demands for a complete ban on' the use of gill nets by commercial fisherman. The Lake Huron Fisheries Assessment Unit presented figures to the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission that indicated corn mercial netters incidentally killed 126;455 salmon and•. trout, while fishing for whitefish, chub and perch in 1984 and 1985, on one portion of Lake Huron. Gill nets kill virtualiyeverything that swirns into thein, not just the fish the corn merc•ial fisherman are aiming for," said Rick-. Morgan, executive vice-president of the federation, in a press release from the provincial organization. According to Morgan, gill nets have been known to tangle and kill diving ducks and loons. • Another study conducted for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in eastern Lake Ontario showed that gill net fishermen are likely to catch three lake trout for every one whitefish. The 60,000 member federation — the largest • conservation association in On- tario — feels if commercial fishermen swit- ched to trap nets most of the nontarget fish ( trout, salmon ) could be released alive to spawn. FEATURE REP RT Andy Tucousky, a commercial fisher- man .in the Bayfield area. said they ( com- mercial fishermen) fish for whitefish and chub in deep water and that trout and salmon are in shallower water. • I:n .a whole fishing season, caicl• Tucousky, he might catch two or three, salmon accidentally. In the summer when he would come into .shallow water (30 feet ) to catch perch, the salmon and trout are in the colder deep ' water. ' According to Tucousky, commercial .fishermen do not fish anywhere near sport fish. We could catch salmon• simply by keeping our nets of the bottom of the lake; he said, but we can't sell salmon so we don't catch them. In fact, he added, a large salmon caught in the.•nets will tear them. The gill nets used to catch perch in Shallow water are too small to catch., trout,,. or salmon, he said. , "I wish they (.anglers and hunters) would come out,on the lake for a.week and see what really happens;" he said. . Commercial fishermen are limited now as,to where and when they can. fish, to the. point, Tucousky said, where it is difficult, . to make a living 'and a ban on gill nets would put him out of business...:The fish people buy must be caught by someone, he - said. -. The trap nets, he said, are no good in deep water only in the shallows. He adds that they must be dreaming when they say birds become tangled in the nets. Tucousky has fished all through the great lakes and he has never seen a bird killed by gill nets. When an angler is out on the dock and he has had no luck catching fish he has to blame someone, said Tucousky.- "Is ucousky. ii,s Yer Fone • Number Not Kurently Listed Or Listed Inkurectly?"
