LESLEY'S GARDENING TW:
When planting pansies, create a massive appearance by arranging plants
in groupings to achieve prominence.
Gently separate plants from container keeping roots intact. Pop out en-
tire root ball of pansy from cell paks and set root ball slightly below, soil
line. A slight depression around plants will serve as a water reservoir when
watering. •

Swirttuner, Linda Reid, of Saltford,
received a National Achievement Award •
for her performance at the Canadian Sum-
mer Special Olympics in Calgary last
year.
•"Our purpose in presenting these
awards is to recognize those in our pro-
vince who, through extrurdinary prowess
and personal, determination have con-
tributed significantly to Ontario's sports
stature,'• said Ontario Premier David
Peterson in a letter to Reid.
Linda cyertatnly meets these re-
quirements. She won two gold and two
silver medals in ('algary.. Her most i1n-
p{•essive win, with a lead of nine metres,
came in the 50 metre backstroke.' She won
silver in the 25 metre backstroke and the 25
metre freestyle. •
Her performance should have earned
her more than the achievement award it
should also have given her a spot on the na-
tional team to compete in the International
Special Olympics in South Bend Indiana
r home of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish).
However, a change in the policies of the
Canadian selection committee means Lin-
• da will probably not compete,
Her, mother, • Betty, said the -process is
too complicated to explain. Rather than
sending the best •cornpetitors they are
selecting repr'sentatives from each pro-
vince, she said.
Linda does not care too much` about
missing the Olympics for the same reason
she will not compete anymore— she loves
her job. She works at Suncoast Enter-
prises, in Goderich and hopes to work full
time very soon.
Over 2,000 Ontario athletes,received the
achievement awards at the Sheridan Cen-
tre in Toronto, April 10, including Ontario
Athlete of the Year, sprinter Ben Johnson.
Linda has been a competitive swimmer
for over 12 years and has more than 40 rib-
bons and medals to show for her years of
effort.
-When she was five years old she just
jumped in the pool and she hasn't looked
back since," said Betty.
