Talking about success and the problems
which arise because of success was
Carmeta Abbot's topic last Tuesday evening
as the Huron County Canadian Parents for
French ( CPF) held their annual meeting at
The Livery.
Abbot, a university instructor from
Waterloo and a founding member of the
Canadian Parents for French program, was
guest speaker at last week's meeting.
"This CPF chapter has been very suc-
cessful in .providing French language pro-
grams in the school boards both in French
immersion prOgrams- and enrichment in
core French programs," she said in. an in-
terview prior to her speech.
She noted the fact that the local CPF„
pro-
gram does a variety of things to promote the
French language.
"It works with the Goderich Recreation
Department to co-ordinate summer pro-
grams;. it helps parents know where they
can get hold of French learning materials;
it promotes French exchange programs and
pen pals; it has special French events occa-
sionally; it supports special enrichment pro-
grams; it provides. a variety of ways in
which kids can use French," she said.
However, she noted, with success of a pro-
gram comes inevitable problems.
"As people realize how well children can
learn French, more and more people want
the same for their children."
This, she said, causes problems – educa-
tional, social and financial. One item af-
fected by an increased interest in French
would be that of French teachers.
Abbot noted CPF promotes all French
programs. •
"We still recognize that the majority of
Canadian children learn French in core pro-
grams," she said.
In looking at the level of ability children
have in speaking French, Abbot noted that
children in immersion programs. exceed
children in core programs.
"Students in immersion programs feel
comfortable with French but the language is
not going to be mistaken for native French.
.ImmerSion. students speak more slowly
(than native French people) and have
grammatical mistake, 'In core programs
(programs in which students learn French
for 40 minutes daily), the language cannot
be transferred as it is in immersion pro-
grams (where all subjects are taught in
French)." .'
Abbot said it was inevitable that core
French programs would begin in earlier
grades in the futnre.
LOCAL CPF CHAPTER
,The meeting, the third since'the Huron
Cbunty CPF group was established in .1984,
attracted about 50 people to the evening's
presentations,.

The local chapter has also seen success in
