Ten years ago, while trla Stewart was con- ducting the Laketown Band and directing the Goderich Teen Tones, she initiated the Sound of GOderich. The first concert featured the Teen Tones, the Laketown Band and the Goderich Choir, a chorus of mixed voices trained by Joseph Herdman. This evening of music was so well received by the people of Goderich that it became an annual event. Before too long the Harbouraires and the Craigellen Singers also became integral parts of this display of local musical talent. At the Sound of Goderich '84 another choir made its debut. This group,. called the MacKay Choristers, is under the inspira- tional leadership of Irla Stewart and will be Legion ph s The Royal Canadian Legion intends to video tape 90,000 school age children and will provide the tapes to police, newspapers and radio or TV stations to help find missing children. The Child Identification Program is being sponsored by District "C" Legion branches. The four zones in District "C" include the counties of Huron, Bruce, Grey, Wellington, Waterloo and Perth. All school board's, public and separate were approached with the plan to video tape classes from kindergarten to grade eight. The children will be taped to record their mannerisms, their facial profile and a full face view. The chorus, a fine mixed choir of "senior voices", came into ex- istence in the Fall of 1982 and was ..the culmination of •a dream of Janet Kalbfleisch, who was then chairperson of the board of directors for the MacKay Cen- tre fopeniors. That first year there were 23 membersand today :there are 49 en- thusiastic singers from Goderich and area, including Bayfield and Port Albert. Accom- panist for the group since its inception is Joan Henwood. The MacKay Choristers is an active organization, performing at several con- certs. each . year and entertaining the residents of Huronview and Maitland Manor. The highlight of each year for this group is its •entry in the Senior Citizen's .Choir Festival in Kitchener where they compete with other choirs. After receiving a second and a third place standing on two previous occasions the MacKay Choirsters were pro- ud to win this competition' last June with a mark of 90. On this occasion the Goderich choir was the only one of the six entered that . came from a small community. The citizens of Goderich will not want to miss an opportunity to hear this find group as they present some of the music they will be singing' at this year's competition, at the Sound of .Goderich '87 on May 13th. In addi- tion, the audience will hear our town's own Harbouraires under the directon of Lorne Dotterer and the Goderich Laketown Band with its new bandmaster Bruce Cookson. to video 90,000 chi' • the taping is bei -g done by members of focal Legion branches. with assistance from their Zone Youth Education Chairman. The zone C-1 (Huron and Bruce Counties- Goderich, Wingham, Hensal ) Chairman is Howard Carroll of Goderich Branch 109. All 53 branches in District "C" financially support the program and have purchas' ed two video cameras plus Video tapes. The program was originally the idea of two Arthur District High School students, .Mark Jones and Paul Ruffolo as a school project. When the program is completed 9,000 school aged:children in zone C-1 190,000 overall in District "C") will be recorded. However, the process will begin again in two • years time to ensure a current tape is always available. Students are taped as they stand in front of a height chart and they state their name, their school, their teacher and how the get to school. According to Howard Carroll; the Legion is funding the prograril and their is no cost to the public.
