Ontario health research
gets $7 million roost
Health research in Ontario is getting a
$7 -million boost, Health Minister Murray
Elston announced recently.
The province's five health sciences cen-
tres will receive $3.5 -million to buy new
research equipment and another
$3.5 -million to support career scientists.
Mr. Elston said the health sciences cen-
tres need new equipment for ' clinical
research to- keep pace with rapid
technological change, and that money
allocated for this purpose has been" divided'
according to the volume of research at each
centre. The centres will determine their
local priority needs for'equipment,
'Career scientists are researchers working
on indepedent projects in clinical or com-
munity health research .There are 66 career
scientists already funded by the ministry,
and the additional funding could result in up
to 14 new appointrnents throughout the -
province.
The new money to the health sciences cen-
tres is awvarded as follows: University of Ot-
tawa and Queens University, $1 -million
each; McMaster University, $1.4 -million;
University of Western Ontario, $1.5 -million;
and Uni rsity of Toronto, $2.1. -million.
SPeakidg to an alumni group at Western,
Mr.' Elston also announced $5.3 -million, for
82 individual .research ,grants for new and
continuing research projects in Hamilton,
Kingston, London, Ottawa,
Penetanguishene, Toronto and Waterloo. •
The 82 , research grants emphasize
research on women's health, care of the
elderly, and ways to stop smoking. Fourteen
grants totalling $472,392 are directed toward
women's health care.
Among the women's projects is a Univer-
sity of Ottawa survey to discover if
,childbearing women using obstetrical ser-
vices would be interested in homebirth, a
birthing entre, and midwifery services.
The results will be useful to health care

therapy is for'women with lupus, a chronic
degenerative disease affecting major
organs in the body.
A new smoking. research project at
McMaster will compare three strategies for
family physicians to use in counselling their
patients to stop smoking,
A new project at the University of
• Western Ontario win examine institu-
tionalized elderly to discover if they can
derive any therapeutic benefit, from tape
recording their life histories. The resear-

and satisfactionwith life can be enhanced.
• Also at Western, a cardiorespiratory test°
'for people age 55 to 85 will time them walk-
ing at different speeds.. The. project is ex-

ward' means of measuring fitness levels in
those taking part in exercise programs.'
"Improvements ;) the quality of"health
care available to Ontarians-'depend on the
strides we can make in clinical and com-
munity health research. The money I am
announcing today reflects the Ontario
government's commitment to maintaining
the basic framework essential for this im-
• portant endeavor," Mr. Elston said.
• The projects were recommended for fun-
ding. by the health care systems research
review committee, an external advisory
body of health research professionals from
' across the province. The , committee is
chaired by Dr. Ian McDowell of the depart=
ment of epidemiology and community
medicine at the University of Ottawa.
