Dear Editor:
On Monday of this week the House of Com-
mons will once again start debating whether
to reinstate the death penalty.
This issue will drag on for months, and on-
ly end with a free vote which is a members
vote according to their own conscience, as
opposed to party lines. The issue is really
very basic, and that is who wants the
responsibility of condemning a man .to
death, if reinstated, and by what means:
hanging, electrocution or lethal injection?
'l'he churches, along with people like Ed-
ward Greenspan, well-known Toronto
criminal lawyer have naturally taken the
stand to oppose' the reinstatement, but for.
obviously different reascns. One is nt.oral,
the other is financial and teamed up to form
the Coalition, against the Return of Capital

We all must make a stand on this issue

somewhere along the line. Three times this
year the news media had brought vividly in-
to my living room sad and solemn faced
policemen carrying flag -draped coffins of
their own people to their final bed. Prison
guards are in the same boat.
. These people are our surrogates and we
must havye them. When either one is killed in
the line di duty, whether male or female, it
is all of our responsibilities and obligations
to make sure the murderer pays with his
life. These people take our place i -n a hellish
occupation, which is of course their choke,
but a dangerous and essential necessity.
Capital Punishment might not' he a deter -
rant, but it is our obligation to give
representatives of the law our every possi-
ble protection - a man judged and convicted
of first degree murder should forfeit his
right to live.
Clifford Olsen made. a mockery of justice
after brutally butchering 11 children and
then cunningly makiing a deal with the
RCMP for 100 grand in a trust fund for
revealing the location of some of the bodies.
"What do you do on garbage day?" - you
put it out.
You don't hesitate - you eliminate. All
over the world people are being killed every
day under the guise of freedom and
democracy. The only•difference is they call
it war,and decorate the lucky ones.
Now I feel so ashamed for sounding off I
must go and repent. Let's see it's in my

Remember mothers with gift of sight
Dear Editor:
A Mother's love' is special for we have'
only one Mother."
As Mother's Day is celebrated on May 10
I have the privilege of asking you, to share
with me a way of honoring and remember-
ing our Mothers.
As a youngster and on into my own
mother and grandmotherhood I wore the
customary red carnation signifying 'rny
mother was still alive. Now that she is
gone I still like to remember her in a' prac-
tical way ... by'restoring someone to sight
who, is blind.
Do"you realize what' a chain reaction is
set off when sight is restored?
There is a truism which says: Give man
Err
t
a fish and he can eat for a day, but teach
him how to fish and he can feed his family.
In a similar fashion a $25 gift can restore
eyesight to a cataract blind person, enabl-
ing that person to work and thusbe able tb
feed and support a family. There are many
people in the developing countries who are
curably, 'blind. Can we in Canada com-
prehend 40 million blind people, almost
twice our population, half of which are
curable if funds were available. It's hard
.to imagine that many blind people but we
can do something about it.
For a $25 (tax deductible) donation to
the Canadian charity Operation Eyesight
Universal, will pay for sight restoring
cataract surgery, .drugs, hospitalization,.
.opecial glasses and.1oiiuw-up care for the •
patient. •
A patient identification card signed by
the attending surgeon will be •sent to you,
or ifyou choose to your mother, giving the
name, sex, age and town or village of the
one restored to sight.
',Why don't you plan on honoring your
mother or her memory in this way?
Send to Operation Eyesight Universal,

Dear Editor:
Permit me to get something off my mind
regarding the use of certain verbs in your
paper.
"Every Valentine's. Day, like some
strange upcoming ritual, hg lays back;
Havana in hand..."
"Here, Annette Hummel, RNA, lays on a
stretcher,.."
Both. of these unquotable quotes are
from the February 18 edition of The Signal -
Star.
To the best of my knowledge, there still
remains a distinction between the verbs
"to lay," and "to lie". While in verbal
comrrrunication one may be hard pressed
to find someone who consistently uses
them correctly, surely we can expect that
in publications, where clarity and ac-
curacy are so highly valued, there would

Calls for ban
on S. Africa
Dear Editor:
I have just came from.a grocery store in
Goderich and decided I must, in all cons-
cience, sit down and write immediately.
I was really shocked to find a ,large
display of canned peaches clearly marked.
"Product of South Africa," on each can.
Anyone who is -in any way aware of the
world today knows of the horrors which'
are taking place in South 'Africa, I truly
find it -offensive that any store would so
display and sell these products.
' As Canadians, we should "stand up to the
horrors of the South African government
and not not profit rule our every'move.
•I hope the store will examine their cons-
cience and remove South African products
from their shelves.
